The Blackhawks get back on the ice at the United Center tonight with the Rangers in town for an Original Six matchup. Chicago will look to bounce back from a terrible weekend in southern California and get back to what was working for them when they were competing with and beating some of the better teams in the NHL.
What’s interesting about the phrase “what’s been working for the Blackhawks” is that there are lots of data points telling us that the Hawks have been “lucky” this season. Their record has been smoke and mirrors in the eyes of some analysts because the deeper metrics haven’t been favorable. When asked about said metrics, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill has consistently pushed back. He’s said the data they collect internally likes what the Blackhawks are doing more than some of the publicly accessible and cited sites.
This is a really good read from Mark Lazerus and Dom Luszczyszyn at The Athletic on that subject. Here’s a really good quote from Blashill on the differences, from his perspective, on the data the Blackhawks are collecting vs. what’s available through some of the more frequently cited outlets:
“Most of the public data, to be super honest, isn’t great,” he said. “I don’t think their expected-goals models are elite; I think they’re OK. Generally, internal models are much better, at least of the three different teams that I’ve been to (Detroit, Tampa Bay and Chicago). Especially if you’re only judging your own game, because if you’re only judging your own game, your scoring chances are done by the same individual over and over again. … A group like SportLogiq has worked hard to try to modify (its model) and make it better, and that’s what we do internally. We work with our analytics people and we go through it. But yes, I would say it’s much, much more stringent than what the public models are. I think a lot of times some of those public models, it’s another version of shots. So if you out-shoot them, you get more scoring chances, because they’re giving the scoring chances easier grades.”
Jeff Blashill is big on analytics, and said the Blackhawks' internal data suggest they're better than the public models say. So I roped @domluszczyszyn, the proprietor of one of those models, into a discussion on public vs. private NHL data. Read it: t.co/USTnmEFJ9g
— Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) December 9, 2025 The message to Sam Rinzel is pretty much what the Blackhawks told Wyatt Kaiser when he went to Rockford for a reset last year: Get back to being the guy who’s worthy of NHL ice time. Kaiser responded about as well as you could hope. Here’s hoping an increased role and ice time will benefit Rinzel away from the bright lights of the League.Chicago head coach Jeff Blashill's message to Sam Rinzel, who was assigned to the AHL: "Go get your swagger with the puck back." #Blackhawks

But he’s also becoming more consistent and predictable, even when making risky plays.“You’re worried something bad might happen, but then he makes the play. It is funny when you see a guy so relaxed.”New story: t.co/XB5zjLAqRA
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 9, 2025 The Blackhawks recalled forward Dominic Toninato on Tuesday before the team practices at Fifth Third Arena. While I know that probably disappointed some folks, it makes sense. He signed a two-year (two-way) deal this past summer and has NHL experience. If the Blackhawks need a placeholder as the 13th forward until captain Nick Foligno returns, it makes sense to bring in the 31-year-old more than a young player whose development matters more to the long-term plan. And, for what it’s worth, Foligno skated before the rest of the team yesterday.#Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno is on the ice before practice skating in a non-contact jersey. He’s been out since Nov. 15 with a hand/wrist injury. pic.twitter.com/bqkm4xzUGy
— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) December 9, 2025 The Athletic published a player poll on Tuesday, and the lead question is a juicy one: Where will Connor McDavid be playing in three years. The responses — again, these are from players — are below. The Blackhawks were mentioned as many times as Vegas! Clearly at least one participant wasn’t taking this poll very seriously, though (note the one mention of the Sabres). When I shared what some analysts’ thoughts were on Blackhawks prospect Marek Vanacker being left off Canada’s camp invite list for the World Junior Championship, I included the comments of Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis on both Vanacker and Providence sophomore forward John Mustard. On Tuesday morning, Ellis came back with a longer list and more comments about some snubs. His comments on Vanacker and Mustard were in line what what he wrote on Monday. But he included Boston University sophomore Sacha Boisvert in this piece. Here’s what he wrote about Boisvert being excluded:Boisvert would have made sense as the fourth-line center or the 13th forward, but his exclusion isn’t the end of the world. He was a bubble player anyway, despite proving to be a dangerous setup man with Boston University. He also missed time due to injury and wasn’t part of Canada’s U-18 program, which made it felt like he was an outsider to begin with, just like…
