Wreaths Across America, Elvis tribute look to replace holiday shopping for Best of the Week

As many people plan to finish some holiday shopping this weekend, a couple of local events may take your attention elsewhere.

Because, c’mon, there will still be another weekend before the last of the presents need to be neatly wrapped under the tree.

Here are a pair of events Saturday to replace — or go along with, if you’re a better steward of your time than I am — the holiday shopping this weekend.

Wreaths Across America Ceremonies: Saturday morning at various local cemeteries

On Saturday morning, people from across the country will gather at local cemeteries to place wreaths on the graves of veterans. Northern Colorado is no different.

Wreaths Across America pays tribute to fallen military veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, Prisoners of War, Missing in Action and first responders through the placement of a fresh balsam hand-tied wreath at their grave marker. In addition to placing the wreath, volunteers keep the memory of the veteran or first responder alive by saying their names.

Last year, more than 1,500 volunteers placed wreaths on graves at Linn Grove Cemetery. At Sunset Memorial Gardens, it was more than 1,600 volunteers.

“We want to teach our next generation what it means for these folks to have sacrificed,” said Chris Ruth, who along with her husband Bull have organized the Linn Grove event for more than a decade. “They served their community and country and sacrificed so we have what we have today.”

The two Greeley cemeteries are far from the only ones holding ceremonies this year. Here are all the local celebrations, with most beginning at 10 a.m.:

Linn Grove Cemetery, 1700 Cedar Ave. Sunset Memorial Gardens, 3400 W. 28th St. Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3800 W. 20th St. Greeley. Evans Cemetery, 2800 11th Ave. Lakeview Cemetery, 232815 Colo. 257, Windsor. Johnstown Cemetery, 23205 Weld County Road 13. Beebe Draw Cemetery (LaSalle), Weld County Road 45 east of LaSalle. Eaton Cemetery, 500 S. Christensen Ave. Ault Cemetery, 253 E. 3rd St. Mizpah Cemetery, 12837 Weld County Road 32, Platteville. Briggsdale Cemetery, Weld County Road 77 north of Briggsdale.

While the window to donate or buy wreaths for this year’s ceremony has passed, organizers are always looking forward.

People interested in sponsoring a wreath at any cemetery can go to tinyurl.com/WreathsAASignUp. From there, select the number of wreaths, which cost $17 each, and a specific location if desired.

For the Love: George Gray and the Elvis Experience Band: 7 p.m. Saturday at University of Northern Colorado Campus Commons Performance Hall, 1051 22nd St., Greeley

After a somber but inspiring morning, make your way to the campus of the University of Colorado for a night of good, old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll.

Saturday’s concert, “For the Love,” will take attendees back in time, featuring a bit of everything from Elvis’ discography.

“Celebrate the legacy of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll with an evening full of spectacular performances, dazzling costumes and your favorite Elvis hits — from gospel to Christmas classics,” the Facebook page for the event reads.

“George Gray and the Elvis Experience Band” have been stepping into their blue suede shoes for more than two decades, and northern Colorado audiences just haven’t been able to help falling in love with the group ever since.

Tickets begin at $20 and are available at tinyurl.com/UNCElvisTickets. Tickets are $5 off if purchased in quantities of 10 or more.
