Chicago police shot and killed a man while investigating a stolen vehicle on the city’s north side late Tuesday night, with a chaotic confrontation between the suspects and CPD leading to an officer being dragged by the car and one person fleeing the scene.
About 10:25 p.m., Chicago police tactical officers in the 5700 block of N. Washtenaw Ave. in Arcadia Terrace were conducting an investigation on a stolen sedan that was parked and unoccupied when another car pulled up alongside it.
Two men and a woman then exited the car and attempted to enter the stolen vehicle, authorities said, with officers approaching to investigate.
At that time, one of the men fled on foot, police said, while the other ran back into the car and got behind the wheel.
According to police, officers directed the man to exit the vehicle, but he refused. As a struggle ensued, police tried to remove the driver from the car. The man then accelerated the car, dragging an officer along with it.
That officer then fired their weapon and struck the man in the head, police said, leading the car to hit another parked car before coming to a stop.
Police removed the man from the car and began to render aid. The Chicago Fire Department later arrived and continued treatment, authorities said.
The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. The woman was taken into custody, and two firearms were recovered.
The officer dragged by the car sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which responds anytime a Chicago police officer fires their weapon, was investing the incident, along with the Investigative Response Team.
Photos and video from the scene showed a large police response, with a section of the street blocked off by yellow police tape.
