REPORT: Kyle Finnegan Signs Multi-Year Deal with the Detroit Tigers

Although the pace of Winter Meetings Day 2 didn’t keep up after its exciting start (Kyle Schwarber to the Phillies, Edwin Diaz to the Dodgers), it seems the night will close with some excitement. According to Robert Murray, free-agent reliever Kyle Finnegan is signing a two-year deal with the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers first acquired Finnegan at the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline (when he was, incidentally, also a target of the Chicago Cubs), but he’ll now extend his stay in Detroit, for a team that figures to be going for it again in 2026. By which I really mean: I’d probably holster those Tarik Skubal rumors for now.

    Tigers Sign Kyle Finnegan

Ken Rosenthal was the first to mention progress towards a deal tonight, but Murray was the first to report the deal as done and include the terms: Two years, $19 million, with a chance to get up to $20M.

Free-agent reliever Kyle Finnegan and the Detroit Tigers are in agreement on a two-year, $19 million contract that can max out at $20 million, according to sources familiar with the deal.

Maybe, once Edwin Diaz came off the board earlier in the day, both sides felt pressure to get serious before the rest of the impact free-agent market started moving.

As for the deal itself: Those are not terribly burdensome terms for a closer with as much experience and innings as Kyle Finnegan. Sure, there were a couple of years there when his peripherals didn’t match the results. But also … he kinda just kept getting results:

    2023: 69.1 IP, 28 Saves, 3.76 ERA2024: 63.2 IP, 38 Saves, 3.68 ERA2025: 57.2 IP, 24 Saves, 3.47 ERA

Not elite, maybe. No. But he generally gets the job done. Gets a lot of groundballs too.

For all those reasons, I wouldn’t have hated Kyle Finnegan for the Cubs. In fact, I kinda had him circled, as a guy I hoped they’d target later in the offseason. Instead, Finnegan and the Tigers re-up after a very successful first run together following the deadline: 18.0 IP, 1.50 ERA, 23Ks.

I still believe the Chicago Cubs will pursue a free agent closer or back-end reliever this offseason. And to that end, the names to keep in mind or Pete Fairbanks and Robert Suarez. Perhaps they, too, will start feeling the pressure to get a deal done. Maybe Day 3 will have a little more action. We’ll see tomorrow.
