WARREN TOWNSHIP — Members of the township’s zoning commission and zoning board of appeals will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the township administration building with zoning inspector Tyler Wilson to begin the process for updating an early 1980s comprehensive plan.
Wilson, who was elected in November as a township trustee to replace Kay Anderson, who is stepping down after 28 years at the end of the month, said the first step will be to prepare a survey that will be sent out to residents in 2026.
“We will go over the questions that we want on the survey. We have some questions ready that we got ideas from other communities that sent out surveys to their residents. The survey will help us see what percent of the residents, for example, would want more sidewalks,” Wilson said.
He said he has spoken to Julie Green, director of the planning commission, whose office will provide assistance, resources and staff to the township in updating the plan.
The survey will focus on various aspects of the township and the different departments.
The 46-year-old current plan is very long and needs to be updated, Wilson said.
He said the town does not look like it did in the 1980s.
“We want to have a plan with short-term, medium-term and long-term goals of what the residents want to see the community be in five, 10, or 15 years. The plan will help trustees and township officials to have a direction to head in and attainable things based on what people in town want,” Wilson said.
The plan will focus on streets, sidewalks, bike paths, parks, the fire station and other items.
Wilson said the survey will ask if residents want a new fire station or in a new location. If so, a levy would need to be discussed by trustees in the future. There are three fire stations in the township.
He said the survey will likely include multiple-choice questions and short responses.
Darryl Parker, a member of the zoning commission, and Wilson have said the current comprehensive plan is very long and needs shortened as well as updated.
“The new plan will be a marketing tool for the township. To update and improve the town, we need to market it,” Wilson said.
He said he spoke to Warren Mayor Doug Franklin, who said Warren had planned to hire a consulting firm to update their comprehensive plan, but then decided to go with the county planning commission. He said city officials were pleased with the work done.
“The planning commission does a great job. I saw the Warren city plan, and it was really good,” Wilson said.
He said costs for the work from the planning commission have not been finalized.
Residents from the township have been asked to take part in the plan update process.
“I have already spoken to some residents who want to be part of this process. I want residents to be at meetings and be part of discussions,” Wilson said.
He said starting in January, the comprehensive plan committee will meet regularly.
Wilson said he will continue as part-time zoning inspector until trustees decide what to do in filling the position. He said trustees plan to look for someone to fill the position.
