Reclusive Rocker Makes Rare, Deeply Personal Move to Help Women and Children in Crisis

Rock icon Steve Perry is making a rare and deeply personal move this holiday season—opening his private musical archive to help women and children in crisis.

The former Journey frontman has launched a new charity holiday auction featuring more than 90 never-before-available items from his personal collection, with all proceeds benefiting Gilead House, a Marin County–based nonprofit that supports unhoused single mothers and their children, many of whom are survivors of domestic violence.

The auction follows a successful event held earlier this year, which raised more than $200,000 for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. This time, Perry partnered once again with Darkives Collectibles, the archival memorabilia platform from Dark Horse Records, to curate an extraordinary selection spanning his legendary career with Journey and beyond.

Among the most coveted pieces are handwritten lyrics to Journey classics “Separate Ways” and “Only The Young,” along with Perry’s own Diamond RIAA Award for Escape, presented for more than 10 million albums sold. The collection also includes signed and authenticated test pressings, vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, studio-used instruments, vintage tour merchandise, promotional jackets, and carefully preserved tour programs from Journey’s 1983 tour and Perry’s Strange Medicine tour in 1994.

Several items tied to Perry’s holiday albums The Season and The Season 3 are also included, such as signed and graded 7-inch singles, test pressings, and a signed promotional guitar.

“I’m excited to once again open up my personal archives for this special Holiday auction and give the fans who have supported me through the years a chance to own a piece of my musical journey,” Perry said in a statement.

“Every item in this collection comes directly from my personal archive. These pieces have been carefully stored for many years, and now I feel it’s the right time to pass them on from my hands to yours, to be enjoyed, remembered and part of your own personal collections.”

Perry emphasized that the heart of the auction is the cause behind it.

“Most importantly, all the proceeds from this archive sale will go to support Gilead House, which is a wonderful charity close to my heart in Marin County that does so much for many families who are trying to rebuild their lives,” he said. “Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey with me. Let’s help make a difference together this Holiday season.”

Fans quickly flooded Facebook with emotional reactions — many sharing deeply personal stories of survival and gratitude.

One fan wrote, "Thank you, Stephen, for your generous nature in giving back to help others who are in need. Your efforts are always so appreciated, and I'm sure your mom would be very proud of the thoughtful and kind man she raised. Thank you, and Merry Christmas. ?."

Another shared, "You are and always have been amazing. Been loving you since I was 7. Thank you for getting me through a tough childhood with your songs."

Others connected directly with the mission of Gilead House.

"As a survivor and thriver from a childhood full of trauma’s no human should experience….thank you, Steve Perry ?. I’ve been looking to purchase some written lyrics but, unfortunately, waaaaaaay out of my price range ?," one fan wrote.

Another added, "What a wonderful cause, I myself am a survivor of domestic violence. The worse damage is what it does to your children. I got lucky and found love with a kind gentleman never any violence. It is possible to find happiness and peace. Bless you what a wonderful legacy ?."

One particularly emotional comment read, "I’m so happy to see this happening. Unless you have been a single mom and a victim of domestic violence, you cannot appreciate the magnitude of this kind and generous expression of love."

Another fan concluded, "A very special heartfelt thanks to Steve Perry for making this happen. God bless you, Steve."

Perry, who has largely avoided the spotlight since leaving Journey in the late 1990s, has made only occasional public appearances and creative releases in recent years — making this gesture all the more meaningful to longtime fans.

The auction is live now through December 16, giving collectors and supporters a limited-time opportunity to own a piece of rock history while contributing to a cause Perry says is close to his heart.
