Trade Talks Reportedly Heating Up on Marlins Righty Edward Cabrera

There have been rumors for a long time now that the starting pitcher trade market was going to get cooking at some point, and, among the many possible targets out there, the Miami Marlins have several.

One of the most obvious, who was a rumored target of the Chicago Cubs back at the Trade Deadline, is Edward Cabrera. The 27-year-old righty, who is controllable via arbitration through 2028, features some of the nastiest stuff in the game. If he could just stay healthy enough, many feel there’s a substantial corner-turn in his future. So he’s a very, very compelling trade target.

And it sounds like things might be starting to percolate:

Trade talks for Marlins’ Edward Cabrera heating up, with Orioles in the mix. Story with @WillSammon. t.co/ywXEdiR59I

“The Miami Marlins, progressing in their efforts to trade right-hander Edward Cabrera, are talking with the Baltimore Orioles among other clubs, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Cabrera, 27, is under club control for three more seasons and projected to earn $3.7 million in arbitration in 2026. Other clubs say the Marlins’ asking price is high, to the point where some teams believe he will not be traded.”

The report goes on to discuss the past trading success between the O’s and Marlins, and is primarily focused on the Orioles as a possible landing spot for Cabrera, even though there’s that “among other teams” line.

I think the leverage angles in these situations can be a little hard to predict from the outside. It’s possible the Marlins simply want the Orioles to up their offer a bit, or the Orioles want to pressure the Marlins to accept. But it’s equally possible that there’s some trade partner out there that the Marlins prefer, and they’re using the Orioles talks to apply some pressure to get the other club to finally put Prospect X on the table. And it’s equally possible that the teams talking to the Marlins about Cabrera are also talking to other clubs about other pitchers, and there’s a little pressure created that way, too. AND IT’S EQUALLY possible that this actually about free agency, and wanting to get a player to sign a particular deal “before we instead trade for Cabrera.”

All plausible. There’s always an angle, and as Jed Hoyer told Marquee yesterday, you have to be thinking about why something is getting out in the first place. It’s usually about leverage, he said.

It’s also important to keep in mind that the Marlins have at least two other starting pitchers who could be involved in trade talks – Sandy Alcantara and Ryan Weathers – and their decision on Cabrera could impact the availability of the other two.
