Stryper frontman Michael Sweet is opening up about his health—and asking fans for prayer after revealing a cancer diagnosis.
In an emotional Facebook update shared Tuesday, December 9, the ’80s metal rocker told fans that a biopsy performed last month confirmed cancer in a thyroid nodule, following his earlier battle with the disease.
“A lot of you have been asking about my health and well being so I wanted to give you an update,” Sweet wrote. “First, thank you all for your continued thoughts and prayers. It always means the world, and I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to think of me?.”

Sweet explained that the biopsy of a nodule on his right thyroid “came back positive. Malignant.” He said he is scheduled for a CT scan and ultrasound next week, followed by a meeting with his doctor and surgeon to determine the next steps.
“This is papillary thyroid cancer, so the good news is that it’s slow growing and something that my doctor seems very optimistic about,” he wrote.

Despite the diagnosis, Sweet said Stryper’s plans will continue as scheduled.
“We start recording the new Stryper album on 12/28, and that will remain on schedule,” he shared. “Once we finish tracking, I’ll be undergoing another surgery to remove my right thyroid and the nodule itself.”

Sweet previously underwent surgery in December 2023 to remove the left side of his thyroid and has been open with fans about the impact the condition has had on his voice.
“If you’ve noticed any changes to my voice over the past 4-5 years, I’m fairly certain that those changes are due to what’s going on near and around my vocal folds,” he explained in an earlier update. “There’s only so much room in there, and when it gets overcrowded, it can wreak havoc on vocal range, power and control.”
He added, "I’m really not the kind of person that wants to put every little detail of everything I’m going through on social media. But I do, however, believe in the power of prayer. I posted and ask for prayer and I wanted to give you all an update so you know how to pray. I deeply appreciate your thoughts and prayers and it means the world to me."

Still, Sweet expressed gratitude and hope, saying he believes the diagnosis will soon be behind him.
“Even though it’s concerning to even hear the ‘C’ word (much less be diagnosed with it), I believe that it will be behind me soon enough,” he wrote. “Please don’t worry about me, as I know and trust that God has a plan. ... I believe that you all are friends. Family."
Fans Are Lifting Him Up in Prayer
Fans quickly responded with messages of support, prayer, and personal stories.
“Praying for you. I've been battling thyroid cancer for two surgeries, and now there is a nodule in Lymph node, so it's not done. God is great, and you got this, my friend,” wrote one fan.
Another shared, “Sending love and continued prayers, Michael Sweet.”
“Lifting you up in prayer! There is power in prayers & I’m living proof! I am a brain aneurysm survivor & just celebrated my 10-year anniversary! God is good & he is the best physician!” another wrote.

One fan added, “Man, you got this! As a cancer survivor myself, it sucks when you can't perform at 100%.”
Others shared similar stories of recovery and hope, including one fan who wrote, “My daughter had thyroid cancer - both left and right sides. And is recovered. Believing on the Rock!”
Sweet closed his message with reassurance and gratitude.
“I’ve always felt some kind of peace in being able to ask for prayer here,” he wrote. “Whether it’s for someone else or for myself, you always take the time to do that, and it is a true blessing.”
