SANTA CLARA — Intel decided to slash dozens of jobs in the South Bay as the company moves to reduce its workforce while attempting to keep and acquire talented workers.
The tech company revealed it cut 59 jobs, all in Santa Clara, where the company has its headquarters. The cuts took place on Nov. 30, but were posted to the state Employment Development Department website this week.
The layoffs are expected to be “permanent,” Intel director of people movement James Warner stated in the WARN letter the company sent to the EDD.
In recent months, Intel has decided to cut about 795 jobs in the Bay Area.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan warned in April that the quest for efficiency would be accompanied by painful job losses. The semiconductor company had previously disclosed its intentions to cut 20% of its global workforce, which would equate to 21,000 workers worldwide.
“There is no way around the fact that these critical changes will reduce the size of our workforce,” Tan said in a company-wide memo. “We must balance our reductions with the need to retain and recruit key talent.”
