Inter 0-1 Liverpool Stats: Late Szoboszlai Penalty Seals Vital Win for Reds

Dominik Szoboszlai’s 88th-minute penalty was enough for Liverpool to end Internazionale’s long unbeaten UEFA Champions League home run.

A late penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai handed Liverpool and excellent win in Italy on Tuesday night, as the Reds ended Internazionale’s long unbeaten Champions League home run.

Inter came into this match on an 18-game unbeaten streak at the San Siro in the UCL, last losing there in the competition over three years ago against Bayern Munich in September 2022.

Liverpool were arguably the better side throughout, but until the Hungarian’s late penalty, they looked like leaving Milan with only a point.

Much of the build-up to the game surrounded Mohamed Salah’s post-match comments following their 3-3 draw at Leeds United in the Premier League last weekend. With Salah left at home for this game, and his future uncertain at the club, Liverpool were hopeful of a positive distraction on this trip to Italy.

Arne Slot’s side thought they’d opened the scoring in the closing stages of the first half. Following another mishap in the draw with Leeds on Saturday, Slot said that Ibrahima Konaté had “been a bit too much at the crime scene” this season.

It seemed as if he’d gone some way to making up for his defensive errors by putting Liverpool into the lead on 32 minutes, but his header was disallowed following a long VAR review, with the ball adjudged to have hit Hugo Ekitiké’s arm before reaching his teammate.

In the end VAR made amends and helped Liverpool to victory. With just five minutes left to go a largely uneventful match was decided from the penalty spot. Florian Wirtz was pulled back inside the box by Alessandro Bastoni, and the referee was instructed to take another look on his pitch-side monitor.

The penalty was awarded and Szoboszlai took on the responsibility to power his 88th-minute spot-kick past Yann Sommer to hand Liverpool all three points.

Following this winner, Szoboszlai has been directly involved in more goals than any other Liverpool player this season (10 – 5 goals, 5 assists), and this is just the second time he has scored in consecutive appearances for the club (previously in February this year).
