In September 2017, Seinfeld and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer.
She opened up on her decision to share her diagnosis with the public while talking with her friend and fellow comic, Amy Poehler.
Sat across from each other in Poehler's studio, filming Good Hang—her weekly podcast featuring high-profile guests, many of which are past co-stars or Hollywood peers—the two women opened up about processing grief and where it's led them in their lives.
"The hard parts of life are the juiciest parts," Poehler began.
"The challenge parts that we have to get through… that's the meat on the bone."
Louis-Dreyfus responded: "Getting through can be rough."
Poehler continued on, telling Louis-Dreyfus her breast cancer diagnosis wasn't "something you needed to share," but by doing so, "was very helpful for a lot of people."
"I had to make a public thing about it," Louis-Dreyfus said.
"I was kind of backed into a corner on that one because we had to shut [Veep] down."
She continued: "But, the good thing about doing that was that I did have this incredible experience of people reaching out to me asking me about my experience going through the breast cancer."
Louis-Dreyfus noted that because of the Veep shutdown, hundreds of people wouldn't be working for the time during which she was receiving care. Despite normally being "very private," she remained open about the situation.
The year after her diagnosis, Louis-Dreyfus announced her remission. She had received six rounds of chemotherapy, as well as a double mastectomy.
She shared a photo to her Instagram on February 14, 2018, writing: "Hoorah! Great doctors, great results, feeling happy and ready to rock after surgery... Here's my first post-op photo."
Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast comes out every Tuesday and is available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, The Ringer, YouTube, and iHeart.
Past guests include fan-favorites such as Michelle Obama, Tina Fey, Idris Elba, and Martin Short.
