‘Mike and Molly’ Star Billy Gardell Opens Up About Losing 173 Pounds and the Trauma Behind His Weight

Billy Gardell isn’t just lighter these days — he’s freer. The Mike & Molly alum, 54, is opening up about dropping a staggering 173 pounds over the last two years, and the heartbreaking childhood trauma that kept him locked in his body for decades before he finally found a way out.

The comedian recently sat down with Adam Carolla for an episode of The Adam Carolla Show, where he spoke with shocking honesty about how pain, fear, and family chaos shaped his relationship with food long before fame ever did. Gardell has joked about his size for years, but this time, he wasn’t hiding behind humor. He was explaining how a little boy who needed protection grew into a man who had to shed that armor (literally!) to survive.

"Protection for a Beating That Is No Longer Coming"

During the interview, Gardell shared that he began gaining weight as a child after enduring abuse from not one, but two stepfathers.

“When my parents got divorced, I had a pretty abusive second stepfather. Took some beatings,” he told Carolla. When asked whether his first stepfather was any better, Gardell admitted, “A little bit, but not as bad as the second guy.”

He went on to explain that the weight served as physical and emotional padding. “When you do that, you have to protect yourself. And I didn't do it in the gym — I just got big.” He played sports as a kid, so he could carry the extra pounds, and then… he just kept carrying them.

It wasn’t until decades later — nearly 40 years — that he understood the truth: “You’re wearing this protection for a beating that is no longer coming.”

By the time he reached his early 50s, the consequences had piled up. “I was overweight, Type 2 diabetes. I was a smoker. I had sleep apnea. My resting heartbeat was like 140. That’s just sitting still. Like I was a ticking time bomb.”

But what finally shook him awake wasn’t fear for himself — it was love. “My wife and kid are everything to me,” he said, describing how he began to wonder whether he’d be around for his son. “With the way the world’s going, I got a 22-year-old man. I need to be on the wall for him.”

He said his wife, who has stood beside him “in front of me or behind me, whatever I’ve needed for 25 years,” also deserved a partner who would be there for the long haul. “As we head into our fourth quarter… that’s owed.”

The comments section lit up with support: “So heartbreaking — and joyful he has risen above and worked through the pain,” one person wrote. Another added, “Love you Billy!!!!”

The Turning Point (and the Help He Finally Accepted)

Gardell also expanded on his journey in a new interview with People magazine, revealing that he ultimately underwent bariatric surgery to kickstart his weight loss after years of yo-yo dieting.

“I chickened out from it a couple times,” he admitted. “But at some point you get sick and tired of being sick and tired.” His weight made movement painful, diabetes added another layer of urgency, and the cycle became impossible to break. “Lose 30 lbs., gain 35 lbs. — that was my pattern.”

He said he realized he needed something drastic, but also needed a mental reset: “Even with the surgery, I was going to have to change my way of thinking.”

The pandemic (and being at higher risk for severe covid due to his weight) sent the message loud and clear. “The idea of not being here for my wife or kid motivated my change,” he told People. “Sometimes you need help, and you have to be humble enough to ask for it.”

Two years, 173 pounds, and an entirely new outlook later, Gardell is proud of the man he’s become; not because he’s thinner, but because he finally feels like he’s living instead of hiding.

And honestly? The glow-up is great. But the emotional weight he shed along the way might matter even more.
