NFL Playoff Picture: Bears Slide, Rams Back on Top, Chiefs Fall Again, Potential Movement in Week 15

The Bears’ loss to the Packers shook up the NFC a bit. With Chicago falling to No. 7, Green Bay moves to into the No. 2 spot. Meanwhile, the Rams take over the top spot again. Over in the AFC, the Broncos used the Patriots being on their bye to move ahead of New England. Elsewhere, the Colts’ freefall and Chiefs’ collapse continue.

That, and more, in this week’s NFL playoff picture check-in.

The Broncos took advantage of the Patriots’ late-season bye week, using a victory over the Raiders in Vegas to move back into the top spot in the AFC. How long they’ll be there is the question, with a matchup with Green Bay on Sunday looming. The Patriots, meanwhile, have no easy task in their own right coming out of the bye and hosting Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo all but ended any wild dream Bengals fans may have had of Joe Burrow rescuing their season in a sloppily close AFC North with a snowy victory on Sunday, and will look to close the gap between them and the Patriots this week.

The Bills are surging, but they don’t control their destiny in the division. Even with a win in New England, they’ll still be trailing the Pats by a game with no remaining meetings on the schedule, and the Patriots have a win over the Bills from earlier this season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars put themselves in the driver’s seat in the AFC South in Week 14 with a win over the reeling Indianapolis Colts, who have lost three straight, and have turned to adding Philip Rivers to the practice squad with Daniel Jones gone for the season, Riley Leonard hurting, and Anthony Richardson on IR. Indianapolis has Seattle, San Francisco, Jacksonville, and Houston on its remaining schedule, and with them on the outside looking in after its loss to the Jags over the weekend, its path to the postseason seems almost impossible at this point.

The Steelers beat the Ravens on Sunday to regain the top spot in the AFC North, knocking Baltimore out of the playoff seeding for the time being. The Ravens have a rematch with the Bengals on Sunday in Cincinnati, and any shot they have at making the postseason likely hinges on a victory over the Bengals. The Steelers host the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football to close Week 15. The Chargers beat the Eagles in overtime on Monday Night Football to close Week 14, but thanks to the Broncos’ 11-2 record, it didn’t move the Chargers up in the seeding, with L.A. holding firm in the top wild card spot. The Texans won their fifth straight on Sunday against the Chiefs. Houston has now won six of their last seven games and moved up to the No. 7 seed in the AFC. The Texans host the Arizona Cardinals this week, and the Las Vegas Raiders the next. Houston’s victory over Kansas City dropped the Chiefs to 6-7 and their playoff chances to 11 percent, inching us closer to the reality of the Chiefs missing the postseason for the first time since 2014. The Packers’ victory over the Bears at Lambeau Field on Sunday moved Green Bay to the top of the NFC North, which in turn moved the Packers into the No. 2 seed in the NFC, and pushed Chicago down to No. 7. Green Bay has to travel to Denver to take on the Broncos in Week 15 while Chicago gets a home date with the Browns, setting up a scenario where these two teams flip spots in the standings again by Sunday evening.

Elsewhere in the NFC, the Rams took care of business against the Cardinals, moving them to 10-3 on the season, and back into the top spot in the NFC. Los Angeles hosts Detroit on Sunday, taking on a hungry Lions team fighting for their playoff hopes, further adding to the potential shuffling of the NFC playoff standings.

The Eagles stayed put at No. 3 despite losing to the Chargers in overtime on Monday Night Football. Philly has a home game against the Raiders in Week 15. Outside of their trip to Buffalo in Week 17, the Ragles have the Raiders and a pair of games with the Commaders left on the schedule.

    Best of the rest …

Despite another win that moved their record to 10-3, the Seattle Seahawks stayed put in the first wild-card spot in the NFC. Seattle hosts the Colts in Week 15 before a rematch with the Rams on December 18. The Buccaneers lost at home to the Saints, dropping their record to 7-6, but remain atop the NFC South by a tiebreaker over the Carolina Panthers, who are also 7-6. Tampa and Carolina play twice down the stretch, with their first meeting in Carolina in Week 16, and their final in the finale in Tampa Bay in Week 18. The San Francisco 49ers return from the bye week with a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Tennessee Titans, before taking on the Colts, Bears, and Seahawks down the stretch.
