Competing at the U.S. Open earlier this month in Austin, Texas, 20-year-old Young fired off new national benchmarks in the men’s 50m free, 100m free and 100m fly.
Young hit his first-ever time under the 22-second barrier in the men’s 50m free, firing off a result of 21.92 in the semi-finals to make history for his nation. Entering the competition, Young held the national standard, notched at 22.15, at the Australian World Championship Triathlon this past June.
He ultimately placed 7th in a slower time of 22.06; however, he became the first-ever Fijian swimmer to make an A-final at the U.S. Open.
In the 100m free, Young posted an effort of 49.38 in Austin, a time which hacked over half a second off his former best-ever en route to finishing 7th in the B-Final. The former record stood at the 49.98 established in May at the Pro Swim Series stop in Fort Lauderdale.
Finally, Young clocked a time of 55.27 to notch a new Fijian national record in the 100m fly. His time broke the former record of 57.12, set by Temafa Yalimaiwai at the 2019 World Junior Championships. Young’s time rendered him the 33rd-place finisher in this event.
