Is Philip Rivers the First Grandpa to Play in the NFL?

The Indianapolis Colts shocked fans on Tuesday, Dec. 9, when the team, facing multiple quarterback injuries, signed 44-year-old retired player Philip Rivers to their practice squad.

Not only is Rivers much older than the average professional football player, but he is also a grandfather. His daughter, Halle, who is the oldest of he and his wife Tiffany's ten children, welcomed a baby boy in late 2024.

Rivers was a member of the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers for 16 seasons before joining the Colts in 2020 shortly before his retirement in 2021. Now that he's returning to the league, fans are wondering — is he the first grandpa to play in the NFL?

No — Rivers is not the first grandfather to play in the league. That title goes to Brett Favre.

Shortly after his last season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2010, Favre's then-21-year-old daughter Brittany gave birth his grandson Parker Brett. Brittany later appeared on the first season of Claim to Fame, a reality competition series featuring contestants with celebrity relatives.

At the time, it was widely reported that Favre was the only active NFL player who was also a grandfather — at least as far as fans knew.

Although Favre didn’t officially retire until early 2011, his final NFL appearance came in the NFC Championship Game in January 2010, three months before his grandson was born. That means if Rivers ends up suiting up for a Colts game, he could become the first known grandfather to actually play in an NFL game.

If the Colts bump up Rivers — who turned 44 one day before his signing on Monday, Dec. 8 — from the practice squad and give him a starting position, he'd be the fifth-oldest starting QB in NFL history, following Tom Brady, Steve DeBerg, Vinny Testaverde, and Warren Moon.

The Indianapolis Colts play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 4:25 p.m. ET.
