A year ago, Jen Jacob says landing the role of nurse Ashley Morgan on the CBS soap opera Beyond the Gates marked a major turning point in her career. But when the opportunity first came up, she told her agent she didn’t believe the role was a fit.
In a recent interview with journalist Cornelius Hocker, shared on his social media platforms, Jacob discussed her first year on Beyond the Gates, including Ashley’s relationship with Derek and Andre and the lessons she has learned while playing the character.
Things were almost very different, as Jacob revealed that she nearly skipped the audition all together. “I got this audition and told my agent I didn't think I was right for it,” she said during the interview.
She added that Ashley was unlike any character she had previously played. “I very standardly do not play the good girl,” Jacob said. “I play bad girls. I play criminals. I play Italian mafia princesses seeking revenge of their fathers,” she said. “[Ashley] was so not like the stuff that I was consistently booking or getting close to booking.
Jacob admitted that the role initially intimidated her. “The character description was like she walks in every room and her smile lights it up,” she recalled. “Like it just didn't feel like a fit.”
Once the episodes began airing, Jacob said she didn’t anticipate how polarizing Ashley would become among viewers. “She's kind of every girl, you know, and like she's the girl next door and she's just trying her best all the time,” she said.
Jacob said a conversation with her father helped her better understand Ashley’s role in the story. Her father pointed out, “Ashley is written as an ingenue, but she is a villain in this story. She is the thorn in between Dani (Karla Mosley) and Andre (Sean Freeman) for so much of what you guys are watching currently.”
Jacob believes that tension is what makes Ashley so polarizing. “Viewers are supposed to love this girl cuz she's just the fun lovable girl next door, but she's really getting in the way of [Dani’s] storyline. And I think once he said that, I was like I can play that. That really makes sense to me.”
