Phil Keoghan Breaks Down The Amazing Race 38 Cast — Including Who Was Destined to Win (Exclusive)

The cast of The Amazing Race 38 was intimately familiar with the idea of "expect the unexpected." After all, that's the unofficial credo of Big Brother, which the majority of this season's racers came from. But despite the teams' reality TV experience, the people behind the Emmy-winning CBS series were eager to shock their systems and truly take them by surprise with how arduous their "European Adventure" would be."There was a real intensity with the TAR38 course set in Europe," says host Phil Keoghan in an exclusive interview with Parade. "Shorter distances between legs, therefore shorter flight time between legs, so of course, less time to rest. Contestants who have competed on other shows think they’re ready for TAR, but it’s always a rude awakening for them. And [that 's] the very first thing I heard from them when they checked in at the end of their first leg. I knew it would be a humbling experience, even for former winners of BB, a completely different way of competing in a house."

That's not surprising in the least for anyone who has watched a Big Brother Diary Room confessional in recent memory."I knew TAR38 was going to be competitive, and in hindsight, can now say a cast of the loudest, most outspoken cast we’ve ever had," he remarks. "At times, I could hear teams approaching from what seemed like miles away. For BB fans, TAR38 was a chance for them to see their favorites in a completely different light, racing with someone special in their life who provided more insight into who they are outside the BB house. My expectations were that this was going to be a highly contested season with lots of emotion. And in that respect, it didn’t fail to deliver. Before The Amazing Race 38 finale, airing Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, Keoghan goes through the journey of each of the 13 teams on Parade, including who he believes was "destined" to win from the beginning.

Brotherly love. Enzo, beloved for years on reality television, wanted to face feeling vulnerable in the real world with his best friend and brother Jack. This run was short, being overwhelmed in an unfamiliar country. But they left TAR without regrets and pleased they gave it a shot.

Angela Murray and Lexi Murray — Mother and daughter

I love parent-sibling teams. There’s always something fascinating about watching the two generations teaming up to compete and seeing the stark differences in their knowledge and decision-making. From the outset, Angela called Lexi her “ride or die." And it was great to see the way they supported each other when they were challenged to do things outside their comfort zone, like when Lexi faced her fear of heights in Prague.

Megan Turner and Matt Turner — Newlyweds

Newlyweds testing their relationship on TAR? It wouldn’t be my first choice. But competing together never fazed them. Incredibly child couple. Their attitude was, "Let’s have fun," and they were very honest about admitting they were not physically ready for what was in store, Matt saying his lack of physicality was a wakeup call to start a fitness journey.  I hope he does and we get to see photos of him ripped sometime down the track!

Kat Dunn and Alex Romo — Dating

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

A dating couple who called their TAR experience a blessing and a dream come true. Things got off to a rough start and the pressure took its toll early. Even when Kat, who had a dance background, was faced with a dance challenge, she struggled. Some frustrating transport issues didn’t help, leading up their elimination. Both were grateful for the experience, and fans responded positively to their optimistic and realistic attitude.

Hannah Chaddha and Simone Chaddha — Sisters

    Robert Voets/CBS

So much love between these two young, smart sisters who were desperate to spend quality time with each other after being apart so much growing up. TAR would be the longest time they've ever spent with each other.  Early on, they worked well together, consistently finishing in the middle of the pack. Their support for each other was heartwarming, particularly when Simone attempted to meet the time cut in the “Street Luge” Roadblock, and they showed the strong sister bond they have.

Kristine Bernabe and Rubina Bernabe — Sisters

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

I can still hear Kristine and Rubina saying, “Aren't you glad to see us, Phil?!” ringing through my ears. Caffeinated, energized, bubbly, exuberant, playful, tireless, dynamic live wires would be the best way to describe these two. Particularly Rubina, perhaps the most peppy participant we’ve ever had on TAR. Motivated to honor their late mother, who loved watching TAR with them as kids. They were all about honoring their mama with joy and the gift of life and proudly being the first all-Filipina female team on TAR.

Natalie Negrotti and Stephanie Negrotti — Sisters

Natalie Negrotti (L) and Stephanie Negrotti (R)

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

Natalie was well-versed in reality competition, perhaps one of the reasons they quickly jumped in at the starting line to try and secure the extra Express Pass from Kyland and Taylor. Those efforts failed, but being part of the “Trainwreck Alliance” with Joseph and Adam and Jag and and Jas helped them secure a win in Leg 3. They described their teamwork as "yin-yang," with Stephanie handling more of the physical challenges while Natalie focused on strategic decisions.  Like all alliances on TAR, in the end, a team’s shortcomings become their personal responsibility. And their navigation issues and some tension with other teams made for a dramatic elimination, perhaps the most dramatic of the season.

Tucker Des Lauriers and Eric Des Lauriers — Brothers

Tucker Des Lauriers (L) and Eric Des Lauriers (R)

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

On paper, these physically gifted brothers were destined to win TAR38. With four consecutive leg wins in a row, the other teams feared they would have a Ricky and César-winning run all the way to the final leg. Early on, they were so far ahead, BB fans failed to see a possible showdown that might occur with meeting up with Angela and Lexi. Romantically, things were complicated. Tucker was dating Rubina — not that there’s ever time for romantic strolls on TAR. And, again, unlike the BB house, contestants are sometimes spread out by thousands of miles. They did sneak in a quick kiss on the ice in the first episode!  In the end, this dynamic duo was eliminated when Tucker was stumped with an “All Greek” memory challenge. The surprising end to their TAR experience, a strong reminder that staying in contention is not just physical; mental acuity is just as important.

Jack Baham and Chelsie Baham — Father and daughter

Jack Baham (L) and Chelsie Baham (R)

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

Chelsie, a former BB winner, and her Firefighter dad seemed like the perfect combination to win TAR 38. Both have proven they can cope with pressure. And their dynamic relationship, heavily rooted in family trust, feels unbreakable. Perhaps [that 's] one of the reasons they felt no need to establish alliances with other teams. Ultimately, their TAR journey had its ups and downs, particularly because of navigational issues, not helped by an unseen injury Jack said he had throughout.

Jas Bains and Jag Bains — Brothers/entrepreneurs

Jas Bains (L) and Jag Bains (R) on 'The Amazing Race 38'

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

From the beginning, luck was on the side of these two successful entrepreneurial brothers from Oman, Washington when they secured the extra Express Pass from Kyland and Taylor. That, added with the fact that Jag started with the confidence of a win on BB25, and the strength Jas brought to the table, helped lead them to a win in the very first leg. Winning is definitely on the minds of TAR’s first Punjabi‑Sikh team, but they feel they have a responsibility to also represent their community in a positive light. A chance to give viewers the opportunity to learn more about their culture.

Kyland Young and Taylor Hale — Dating

Kyland Young and Taylor Hale on 'The Amazing Race 38'

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

It’s no coincidence that there are two BB winners in the final 4 of this season’s TAR. Kyland and Taylor clearly demonstrated as the only team made up of two former BB contestants — who, at the time of us filming, were also dating — why they were called “Fan Favorites”. They came into the race focused on winning, but they also saw it as a chance to test out their relationship. They got off to a perfect start, winning two Express Passes, one of which they gave away to Jas and Jag, but there were some rocky legs for them after that. But they continued to hang in there, always thought of as a threat and consistently targeted by the other teams.

Izzy Gleicher and Paige Seber — Engaged couple

Izzy Gleicher (L) and Paige Seber (R) on 'The Amazing Race 38'

Izzy and Paige kept things interesting for me. I always enjoyed the fun banter we would have at the mat, particularly Izzy’s quick wit, which seemed to match her professional flautist skills. Humor is a big part of the relationship between this engaged couple. For the most part, they were happy-go-lucky. But [they] did get pretty stirred up about some of the other teams at times, in particular the U-Turn dished out to them by Jas and Jag, which they felt was more than just gameplay. Still, they are survivors, having avoided elimination after that game-changing U-Turn and the competition getting more and more fierce. They come into the final 4 with lots of life skills, great adaptability, attention to detail and ability to perform under pressure.

Joseph Abdin and Adam Abdin — Brothers

Joseph Abdin (L) and Adam Abdin (R) on 'The Amazing Race 38'

    Sonja Flemming/CBS

Fair to say that you know when Joseph is around and why he got so much attention on BB. Next to Rubina, he is a close second when it comes to energy, but with an even louder voice. The love between these two brothers is genuine and so relatable to those who have experienced the special bond between some siblings. Joseph was nothing but encouraging to Adam during his first reality TV appearance. They’ve had some ups and downs along the way. But, as Adam’s confidence has grown, they’ve become stronger and stronger. They are certainly underdogs for the win. But, now, more than ever, they feel they have a real shot at winning the one million dollar prize.
