As expected, despite earlier denials, the rumors about the Brewers possibly trading starter Freddy Peralta continue to tick up. The starting pitcher market in free agency and trade is sufficiently robust that I do wonder whether the Brewers would be able to get the kind of huge return they’re undoubtedly seeking. So, with that in mind, it’s also unsurprising to learn that Peralta is not the only significant Brewers pitcher drawing trade interest.
Joel Sherman reports that the Yankees and Mets have been pinging the Brewers about closer Trevor Megill. The big righty has really turned a corner with the Brewers (the Cubs knew there was potential there, but just couldn’t unlock it), posting a 2.60 ERA and 2.80 FIP over the last two seasons (93.1 IP). Any club would love to have him in their bullpen, and you could imagine the trade price tag being substantial.
Megill is projected by MLB Trade Rumors to earn a little over $4 million in his second-to-last year of arbitration, so it’s not like this would be a huge salary-mover for the Brewers. Instead, the idea would be to cash in on a breakout 32-year-old reliever while they have the chance. Again, it’s the M.O., and it’s served them very well.
So, as with Peralta, here’s me hoping the Brewers actually don’t trade Trevor Megill. The organization is already set up so well for the long-term, with a young core and one of the best two or three farm systems in baseball. I hate it.
