Erin Murphy revealed her true feelings on Tabitha, the short-lived Bewitched spinoff that aired in the late 1970s. The actress, who played young witch Tabitha Stephens in 103 episodes of the original ABCsitcom from 1966 to 1972, admitted she wasn’t a huge fan of the spinoff featuring her character.
Speaking with Celebrity Drop in a December 2025 interview, Murphy, 61, said she never watched all of the episodes of the spinoff series, which starred Lisa Hartman, despite the fact that childhood photos of her were featured heavily in the series intro.
“I didn't,” Murphy said. “I never saw all of it. It was one of those shows, that's a question that people ask me very frequently is why wasn't I Tabitha? Why didn't they use me? But when they filmed it and started it, I was 12. So, the concept was that Tabitha was a grown-up. So, there was never even an option that I be that part. So, I don't want people to be upset with Lisa Hartman. She was great for the part, but I didn't see all the episodes.”
“I don't know,” Murphy continued. “I think they made it a little too quickly. I don't think it really carried the characters over. I mean, there were a lot of discrepancies between the characters on Bewitched and their characters on that show. So, I don't know. It was considered pretty universally a flop.”
While the original Bewitched series ran for eight successful seasons, Tabitha only aired on ABC for 11 episodes, from September 10, 1977, to January 14, 1978, before it was canceled. In the series, Hartman played Tabitha Stephens as a young woman working as a production assistant at a Los Angeles TV station. Her co-stars included Robert Urich, Mel Stewart, and Karen Morrow.
Hartman once addressed the failed series in a 2005 interview with TV Guide, where she agreed that the show got the shaft. “It did,” she said. “I think it was bad timing.”
She also revealed that she wasn’t even asked to do commentary when the series came out on DVD in 2005.
Still, the Knots Landing actress counts Tabitha as her big break. On January 14, 2022, Hartman, now 69, posted a throwback photo of the show’s opening credits to X and wrote, “Can’t believe the final episode of Tabitha aired so many years ago today! So grateful!!"
In the new interview with Celebrity Drop, Murphy said she doesn’t think there will be another Tabitha spinoff. “That was talked about a couple years ago, and I haven't heard any movement,” she said. “I don't think there's been a year since we went off the air that there hasn't been some buzz about redoing Bewitched in one format or the other. “
Murphy added that if a Bewitched reboot does come to fruition, she would “of course” agree to appear in it if asked.

As for what she thinks Tabitha Stephens would be doing today, Murphy recently told Remind magazine that she believes her character would be a strong woman. “I think she would be very successful at whatever she did,” Murphy said in an October interview with the magazine. “I think she would not be afraid to use her magic because women of my generation and Tabitha’s generation are free to be and do whatever they want. So, I think she wouldn’t feel the need to hide in the closet. She would be out there living her best life.”
