Shreyas Iyer injury update: ODI vice-captain making steady progress, could come back at IPL 2026

One player who knows how to convert setbacks into comebacks is none other than Shreyas Iyer. The Indian ODI vice-captain has seen major injuries in his career but has risen to dominate everytime. Whether it was his prolonged back injury that left his left leg paralysed, or his shoulder injury.

Iyer hit a century on his Test debut after his shoulder pain and delivered an all-timer ODI World Cup 2023 after his back surgery. Despite getting snubbed from BCCI’s central contract, Iyer won multiple trophies in 2024, including IPL (with KKR) and almost won it again with a new franchise (PBKS) earlier this year.

Now, he is out with a spleen injury that saw him internally bleeding in his abdominal region. Thankfully, Iyer continues to recover. The 31-year-old suffered a serious impact injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney, where an attempted dive in the field resulted in a laceration to his spleen. What initially looked like a routine setback quickly turned into a long rehabilitation process that has now ruled him out for the remainder of 2025.

    Shreyas Iyer update

According to a report by India Today, Iyer is scheduled for his next ultrasound scan in the second week of December. It will be a key checkpoint that will determine the next phase of his recovery. The scans will be reviewed by top specialist Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, who has been overseeing the case. He is the same doctor who oversaw when injuries grappled the likes of Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and many other star cricketers.

Iyer is likely to head to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru immediately afterward to begin structured rehabilitation, provided medical clearance is granted.

As of now, Iyer has been permitted only daily routine movements and basic isometric exercises. He has been strictly advised against any activity that increases intra-abdominal pressure. Only after the next round of scans will he be allowed to resume cricket-specific skills such as batting, fielding and strength work.

While early projections suggested a two-month recovery window, the nature of the injury means caution is the priority. With all these updates, Iyer could have his comeback at the start of IPL 2026, where he is expected to resume captaincy duties for Punjab Kings.

In his absence, India have handed opportunities to Ruturaj Gaikwad at No. 4, who responded with a maiden ODI century in Raipur. It was a terrific innings but India head coach Gautam Gambhir himself mentioned that Iyer would walk in when available in the ODI team. However, with no immediate ICC 50-over tournament on the horizon, the management is prepared to be patient and they should rightfully be.
