Local Governments Delay Tuesday Services, Operations Over Freezing Temps and Road Conditions

Local governments in Orange and Chatham counties shared their altered schedules and operations for Tuesday, Dec. 9 following Monday afternoon’s precipitation and freezing overnight temperatures.

Forecasts of potential snow, sleet and rain on Monday afternoon into the evening led the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory for much of the Piedmont, going into effect from Monday morning through at least Tuesday at 12 p.m. Because of the precipitation and temperatures consistently around or below freezing overnight, the NWS warned of the chance of seeing slick road conditions and a flash freeze possible for Tuesday morning.

As a result, many town governments in the community issued delayed openings and changes to service for Tuesday. Here are the highlights, as shared by each local government:

    Town of Chapel Hill

The Town of Chapel Hill issued an alert saying its public transit, solid waste, parks and recreation and library services would be among those impacted on Tuesday.

Chapel Hill Transit will resume service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, after finishing operations early on Monday (10 p.m.). The Chapel Hill Public Library will not hold any morning programs and will wait to open until 1 p.m., as will all indoor parks and rec facilities. Residential and commercial trash collection will be delayed by two hours for Tuesday routes.

The town said it would share any further changes on social media and to newsletter subscribers, as well as keep its Emergency page updated with major alerts.

    Town of Pittsboro

Pittsboro’s town government said, due to the expected winter weather and out of an abundance of caution, its offices and facilities will wait to open until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

    Other Key Changes

Orange County Schools will not hold instruction on Tuesday out of concern for road conditions, while the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district will have a two-hour delay. The District Court in Orange and Chatham counties will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, with operations not beginning until 10 a.m. The Carolina Dialysis location in Carrboro will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, with patients not being seen until 9 a.m.
