Fans Remember 80s Heavy Metal Legend on 21-Year Death Anniversary

The heavy metal world lost one of its biggest influences 21 years ago, but fans continue to honor his legacy.

'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott was tragically killed on Dec. 8, 2004.

While performing with his band, Damageplan, in Columbus, Ohio, Abbott lost his life during the first song of their show. A troubled fan rushed the stage and shot the guitarist multiple times.

Damageplan's head of security was also killed, along with a fan and employee of the venue. Columbus police were finally able to stop the shooter, ending in his death.

The tragic evening was followed by a public memorial, with thousands of fans in attendance.

Per Rock Feed: "Dimebag’s influence continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans worldwide.

"Today we honor the legacy of Dimebag Darrell, the legendary guitarist who helped shape the sound of modern metal with Pantera and Damageplan."

To this day, Abbott is remembered as one of the greatest guitar players of all-time—number 131, according to Rolling Stone's 2023 list.

The outlet honors Abbott's way of "forging a style that combined brutally precise, punk-honed grooves with splatter-paint melodic runs."

Formed in 1981, Pantera remained active through 2003. Some remaining members of the band reunited in 2022, and continue to play today.

Abbott was a founding member of the group, alongside his late brother, Vinnie Paul. At the time, both boys were teenagers. Pantera honed its sound through glam metal and power metal, earning four Grammy nominations during their original run.

After Pantera formally split in 2003, the Abbott brothers went on to form Damageplan. They only released one album before the Colombus tragedy.

Following his untimely death at the age of 38, Abbott has been honored throughout the years by various musicians and fans. He was inducted into the Hollywood RockWalk in 2007, and an annual concert was erected in his honor in 2010 known as Dimebash.

"21 years gone. You're loved and missed so much, every single day. You continue to inspire so many, and you will, forever. God Bless Saint Dime, forever a legend," reads one fan tribute, posted to Dimebag Darrell Universal Fans United's Facebook page.

Another tribute calls Abbott "a guitar legend whose impact on music remains unforgettable."
