Mariah Carey Is on the Verge of Setting a New Record With Her Christmas Classic

‘Tis the season. Mariah Carey is back on top of the Billboard Hot 100 with her holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and she’s on the verge of setting a new record.

Carey’s evergreen holiday hit jumped four spots to No. 1 for its 19th total week on top of the Hot 100, tying Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, as the single with the most weeks at the top during the chart’s 67-year history, Billboard reports.

While Carey’s Christmas carol has tied the record over several holiday seasons, Shaboozey’s 2024 hit and Lil Nas X 2019 banger accomplished their chart domination in a single season, without a holiday to bring them back up the chart.

Although Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was originally released on her 1994 album Merry Christmas, it’s actually become more popular with the advent of streaming. In fact, it didn’t even hit the top 10 until December 2017 and broke into the top five for the first time the following year. Its stint in the poll position began with a three-week run in 2019, followed by two weeks in 2020, three in 2021, four in 2022, two in 2023, and four in 2024.

Since we’re only in early December, it seems likely that Carey’s Christmas classic will break the record before the year ends.

“When I wrote [it], I had absolutely no idea the impact the song would eventually have worldwide,” Carey toldBillboard in 2021. “I’m so full of gratitude that so many people enjoy it with me every year.”

Nineteen seems to be a lucky number for Carey this week, as Billboard also notes that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the singer’s 19th Hot 100 No. 1, which gave her the most among solo artists and leaves her one No. 1 away from the Beatles’ record of 20 No. 1s. Carey is also the first artist to have No. 1 hits in four different decades (1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s), the publication reports.

Carey’s song isn’t the only holiday hit in the top 10 this week. At No. 2 is Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” which rises four spots from No. 6 to No. 2, giving the 1984 George Michael-Andrew Ridgeley hit a new chart peak.

Also moving up the Hot 100 is Brenda Lee’s classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” which is up from No. 7 to No. 3, followed by Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” up to No. 4 from No. 8, while Ariana Grande’s 2014 hit “Santa Tell Me” is up from No. 13 to No. 8.

Rounding out the top 10 are Nat “King Cole’s “The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You),” up to No. 9 from 18, and Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of Year,” which moves up to No. 10 from 17, Billboard reports.
