A second stabbing on Charlotte’s public transit system, this time by a man who was allegedly in the United States illegally, has drawn national attention as Republican leaders voice support for the immigration crackdown in the state.

On Dec. 5, Oscar Solarzano, 33, boarded a Blue Line light rail train at New Bern Station while intoxicated and began yelling at passengers, according to an arrest affidavit by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. When passenger Kenyon Dobie asked him to stop shouting, Solarzano allegedly confronted him and challenged him to a fight.

Dobie asked Solarzano to back away and then pushed him against a seat when he refused. Solarzano rose and drew a large knife from his pocket and allegedly stabbed Dobie in the chest, the affidavit states.

Solarzano allegedly fled the scene and was arrested shortly afterward, according to the affidavit. Officers stated that he confessed to the stabbing after being informed of his right to remain silent. Solarzano did not know Dobie prior to the incident.

Solarzano is charged with felony attempted murder and aggravated assault. The affidavit states that he was previously banned from Charlotte Area Transit System trains, resulting in an additional charge of breaking and entering.

The Charlotte Public Defender’s office, which is representing Solarzano, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dobie wrote on a GoFundMe page that he has been hospitalized and the attack caused him to bleed into his lungs. “Luckily I survived but my body has taken plenty damage,” he wrote. “Please pray and help me with a better recovery.”

Dobie’s stabbing is the second high-profile act of violence on Charlotte’s transit system this year after the fatal stabbing of Ukrainian refugees Iryna Zarutska in September led to the passage of a strict crime bill known as “Iryna’s Law” tightening pre-trial release requirements and seeking to resume the death penalty.

That law took effect on Dec. 1, days before Dobie was stabbed. In a Monday morning order, a Mecklenburg County judge denied Solarzano bond and found that he could not be determined to have legal residence in the United States.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a detainer order for Solarzano on the morning of Dec. 6, according to court records, finding that he is subject to a final order of removal and had illegally reentered the United States after a previous removal. A Mecklenburg County magistrate judge also noted that he had been deported previously.

The stabbing comes amid ongoing operations by Customs and Border Patrol and ICE throughout North Carolina, with more than 425 individuals detained in Charlotte since November. Republican leaders in the state and across the nation quickly circulated the story as proof of the need for better  immigration enforcement in the state.

“Another stabbing by an Illegal Migrant in Charlotte, North Carolina,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social Dec. 6. “What’s going on in Charlotte? Democrats are destroying it, like everything else, piece by piece!!!”

State Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) blamed Gov. Josh Stein for the attack, writing in a post on X that “Gov. Stein and the Democrats need to stop coddling criminal illegal aliens.”

North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall said on social media that the attack is evidence Stein must do more to cooperate with Homeland Security operations in the state.

“The stabbing on the Charlotte light rail last night was committed by an illegal alien. @DHSgov is working to detain as many criminals as possible, but we need stronger cooperation from the “leaders” in our state,” Hall wrote. “@NC_Governor, it’s time to step up and do more to protect NC citizens.”

In a statement Monday afternoon, Stein spokesperson Olivia Weidie said that public safety is the Governor’s top priority and that he supports immigration enforcement.

“He has always said that violent criminals who entered our country illegally should be deported. This is no exception,” she wrote. “Governor Stein is committed to making sure people feel safe going about their daily lives, and he is grateful that Chief Patterson was already surging law enforcement throughout Charlotte with Operation Safe Season.”

Stein wrote in a social media post Dec. 5 that he has been in communication with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police since the stabbing.

“Please join me in praying for the full recovery of the victim,” Stein wrote. “I am grateful to the state law enforcement agencies that are assisting the operation. Public safety is a top priority for us all.”
