Ryan Seacrest is opening up about how he and his family are navigating the holiday season following the loss of his father, Gary Seacrest.
Speaking with PEOPLE at the iHeartRadio 102.7 KIIS FM Jingle Ball on Saturday, December 6, the Wheel of Fortune host reflected on how different this Christmas will feel without the man he described as “a hero and a best friend to me.”
“This will be our first Christmas without him,” Seacrest, 50, shared, admitting, “I’m not quite sure what it'll be like yet because we haven’t been there to experience a Christmas without him. But we’ll certainly honor him.”

Pour a little glass of red wine, his favorite, and toast to him,” Seacrest said, noting that despite the grief, “it’ll be a special Christmas.”
Seacrest first announced his father’s passing in an emotional Instagram post: “It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that my loving father peacefully passed away earlier this week… We are heartbroken.” He went on to call Gary “a devoted husband for 56 years, an incredible Papa to Flora, and my best friend.” Seacrest’s father died in October at age 79 after a long battle with cancer.

And while this holiday season carries a different emotional weight for Seacrest, he’s also gearing up for one of his busiest nights of the year: hosting Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, a role he’s held since 2006. The long-running ABC special is one of television’s biggest annual broadcasts, drawing millions as it counts down to midnight from Times Square in New York City. The annual ABC special will feature a stacked lineup this year, too, including performances from Green Day, SZA,Cardi B, andSabrina Carpenter.
For Seacrest, keeping the long-running tradition alive feels especially meaningful this year. Hosting the show—something his father loved watching him do—hopefully will offer some comfort as he navigates his first holiday season without his dad.
