Man shot by police Monday in South San Francisco

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Police shot a man early Monday morning after he allegedly brandished a knife at officers, authorities said.

The man, who was identified only as being in his 20s, was transported to a local trauma hospital where he was in critical condition, according to a press release from the South San Francisco Police Department.

Around 5:10 a.m. Monday, police were alerted that a man on the 900 block of Sandra Court, armed with a knife, was under the influence of drugs and making suicidal comments, authorities said.

As officers spoke with the person who reported the incident outside, the man emerged from a residence.

Responders attempted to de-escalate by speaking with the man; he initially seemed receptive as he approached officers, authorities said. The man then took out and brandished a concealed knife, prompting officers to use a stun gun and order him to drop the weapon.

The stun gun did not have an effect, and the man ignored the officer’s orders and continued moving toward police, authorities said. The officers gave more orders to drop the knife, but the man held onto it and “charged” towards the officers with it raised, they added.

Two responding officers discharged firearms, and the man was struck, authorities said.

Officers administered medical aid at the scene. The man was then taken to the hospital by the South San Francisco Fire Department, authorities said.

There were no other injuries to community members or officers in the incident, authorities added.

The man’s actions are under investigation by the South San Francisco Police Detective Bureau, authorities said. The officer-involved shooting will be investigated by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
