As the Washington Nationals continue to reorganize under new baseball president Paul Toboni, we’re increasingly seeing evidence that the team will genuinely consider trading lefty MacKenzie Gore this offseason. Now or at the 2026 Trade Deadline seems likely either way, and since no one knows what might happen to the first part of the 2027 season – the last year Gore would be under control – it’s possible Gore has significantly more value right now than he will in July. Plus, if the Nationals wait, there is the risk of injury or underperformance.
So, yeah, a trade makes sense, and we’ll continue to monitor for potential Cubs interest and market impact (remember, the front office that sought an exorbitant price at the deadline – there were rumors that they wanted Cade Horton AND Matt Shaw included in a deal! – is now gone). But this post isn’t really about Gore, since that’s all already out there.
Instead, I wanted to talk about this, which Michael touched on in the latest Lukewarm Stove:
It’s not just MacKenzie Gore. Nationals also drawing heavy interest in CJ Abrams. With @WillSammon. t.co/hQB3wApTxK
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) December 8, 2025Cutting to at least one chase: no, I don’t see C.J. Abrams as an ideal fit for the Cubs. Of course they could use him – most teams could – but there’s no way the price tag makes sense for them compared to other suitors (at least not in the way that, for example, Gore absolutely could make sense).
But that doesn’t mean Abrams being sincerely available wouldn’t impact the Cubs.
Consider that the Cubs are clearly in the market for a third baseman, to the extent one offers an immediate offensive upgrade over Matt Shaw in 2026 (without necessarily precluding Shaw from contributing in a utility role and then taking over at second base in 2027 if Nico Hoerner departs in free agency). There are actually a lot of good options out there at the spot, from Alex Bregman to Eugenio Suarez to Munetaka Murakami to Kazuma Okamoto. The Cubs have been connected to all four of them by one rumor or another.
Here’s the thing about that third base market, though: it will necessarily butt up against the shortstop market. That’s pretty much always true, but you can see it easily this year. For example, Bo Bichette is a shortstop whom many believe could move to third base. Ha-Seong Kim is a capable shortstop (if he’s healthy), but also plays anywhere on the infield. The teams that look at these guys, as shortstops or third basemen, might necessarily be less inclined to be aggressive on a third baseman if they are trying to coordinate their infield and their offseason moves. If Abrams is ALSO available as a shortstop, it’s possible that further nudges guys like Bichette and Kim toward teams that want them, but want them as third basemen.
Moreover, although Abrams is a shortstop, I don’t want to sleep on the fact that his metrics at the position the last two seasons have been quite ugly. At 25, there’s probably still some runway there, but it’s also not inconceivable that some suitor actually sees his best spot at third base or second base right away. And, because he’s cost-controlled through arbitration for three more seasons and offers still-untapped offensive upside, it’s not hard to imagine he might be a preferred target for a lot of teams out there, even if not necessarily the Cubs.
So, that is all to say, yes, please, Nationals. Consider trades for Abrams. Make him widely available, and pitch him as a shortstop SLASH third baseman SLASH second baseman.
From there, if the Cubs want to be aggressive, or even merely opportunistic, at third base, the free agent market would have a helpful dent in it. Maybe it already does.
