ORLEANS COUNTY, N.Y. — The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office says there’s been reports of fake phone calls coming from the Orleans County Jail, attempting to scam them out of money.
This comes after a person in Medina received a false phone call on Saturday, saying a family member had been arrested earlier in the day and would be released if they paid over the phone, the Sheriff’s Office says.
According to the Sherriff’s Office, the recipient of the call made the payment, before realizing it was a scam.
Deputies say they will never request money over the phone, through an app, gift cards, or prepaid cards.
If you receive a fake call like this, you are advised to hang up immediately and call 911.
