And really easy to want to see the Cubs take a flier on bringing back such a live arm, with the flexibility to pitch out of the rotation or the bullpen.
But it’s not happening, as Soroka, who is still only 28, is signing another one-year deal to try to build that value back up. This time, with the Diamondbacks:

Meanwhile, the signing does raise a question about whether the Diamondbacks are already making plans to move on from Zac Gallen, who has been connected to the Cubs. There’s plenty of space in the rotation, what with Corbin Burnes out until at least midseason, but I don’t know what the budget situation looks like. Committing $7.5 million on a pure flier might be a bit much for the DBacks, who may instead be viewing Soroka as more of a “this is our rotation addition this offseason, period, hope it works.”
As always in these situations, it could be that the Diamondbacks always wanted two starting pitchers, and signing Soroka now is just protection/leverage with respect to Gallen. If not, he just lost a suitor, and his situation got a little tighter. If it’s that one, you might see more movement in his market quite soon.
