Several states across the West and Northwest are under winter storm warnings, with some areas expected to receive up to 20 inches of snow and winds reaching 65 mph. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), these conditions could be “life-threatening” for anyone who isn’t prepared.
The alerts, issued on Sunday, December 7, are active in Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Residents are urged to stay alert and take precautions if travel is necessary.
In Wisconsin and Iowa, the NWS predicts that snow will move eastward overnight, with the heaviest accumulation expected in central and northeastern areas of both states.
“Road conditions across portions of northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin are slippery and snow covered so be sure to exercise caution if you are driving tonight,” officials said, noting that travel could be extremely challenging in affected areas.
Colorado’s Elkhead and Park Mountains could receive up to 3 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph. Drivers are warned that travel may be “very difficult to impossible” for much of the day.
Winter storm warnings extend to Wyoming’s Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges. Cheyenne authorities say being outdoors overnight could be "life-threatening to those caught unprepared."
Alaska Braces for Heavy Snow and High Winds
Alaska is forecasted to see some of the most severe weather, with snow totals in Hyder expected to reach 16 to 20 inches. Travel should be avoided unless necessary.
Skagway, Haines Borough and Klukwan could see 12 to 18 inches of snow and winds up to 50 mph, while Glacier Bay may receive 10 to 20 inches with gusts near 40 mph.
The Juneau office of the NWS cautions, “Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. The cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero near White Pass could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.”
Record-Cold Temperatures Across the Midwest and East
The NWS has also warned of record-cold temperatures across parts of the Midwest, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. Its Day 3–7 Hazards Outlook indicates that heavy snow could impact Michigan, New York, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Washington, with heavy precipitation possible in Washington and Oregon.
