NW Indiana man charged in dismembering, shooting man in North Lawndale home

A northwest Indiana man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of dismembering and fatally shooting a 68-year-old man in a North Lawndale home before setting fire to it earlier this year, Chicago police said.

Deparris Slaughter, 32, of Munster, Indiana, was charged with four felonies: first-degree murder, dismembering a human body, concealing a homicide and residential arson, according to police.

Authorities allege Slaughter dismembered and shot Michael Lipford on March 7 in a North Lawndale home in the 2300 block of South Kirkland Avenue. He allegedly also set fire to the home.

Lipford was found in the basement with his arms and right leg severed, a deep cut to his left leg and a neck injury. He died from gunshot wounds to the neck and chest, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Chicago firefighters, responding to the fire, found Lipford’s body. Inside the home, investigators also found contractor bags, a reciprocating saw, shrink wrap and a cellphone.

Slaughter was arrested Saturday in Burnham. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
