CHCCS, Orange County Schools Cancel Monday Operations Based on Wintry Mix Forecast

The two public school districts in Orange County asked students and staff to stay home on Monday based on a winter weather forecast that includes snow.

Orange County Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools each sent out a message to families and educators on Sunday night, saying the forecast probabilities shared by the National Weather Service indicate precipitation with cold temperatures — with rain potentially changing to snow mid-day in the Triangle. NWS currently projects the chance of snow accumulations ranging from half an inch of snow to nearly two inches in the Triangle, including northern Orange County.

“We consider school buses, student drivers, and the ability for all staff to safely travel to school/work and then back home,” wrote CHCCS Chief Communications Officer Andy Jenks. “As for Tuesday morning, we’re still watching the forecast closely, especially the hard freeze and black ice being expected. We’ll share another update with you [Monday].”

Orange County Schools similarly cited “unpredictable winter weather and the potential for hazardous travel” in its announcement Sunday night.

As a result of the forecast, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of central North Carolina spanning from Monday morning through Tuesday evening. Following expected precipitation on Monday, the NWS warned of the chance of seeing slick road conditions and a flash freeze possible on Monday evening.

Monday marks the first “snow day” used by either Orange County school district in the 2025-26 academic year. Both CHCCS and Orange County Schools operated on a two-hour delay on Friday as a result of winter weather forecasts overnight Thursday.

    Safety Tips

During severe winter weather, the North Carolina Department of Transportation urges people to avoid traveling during storms unless “absolutely necessary.” For those who do venture onto snowy or icy roads, the state department requests people drive at slower speeds, leave plenty of room between themselves and others, and clear all ice or snow from a vehicle before traveling. If you become stranded while driving, safely pull off the road, remain in your vehicle and call for help.

During periods of freezing temperatures, there are several warming centers and overnight offered to Orange County community members to rest and stay safe. IFC has shelters available in Chapel Hill every night, and the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness organizes shelters any night where temperatures are set to reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below. From 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., those needing a warm place to stay can utilize the 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard building in Chapel Hill, St. Matthews Episcopal Church on Hillsborough’s St. Mary’s Road, or Hillsborough Presbyterian Church on West Tryon Street.
