Alabama men’s basketball blows out UTSA

No. 12 Alabama walloped UTSA in Coleman Coliseum Sunday 97-55. The Crimson Tide never trailed and led by as many as 44 points.

Despite its high point total, Alabama shot just 39% from the floor and 28% from beyond the arc. In fact, only four players managed to shoot 50% or better — guards Labaron Philon, Jalil Bethea and Jacob Martin and forward London Jemison.

Philon finished the game with 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. He has now scored 20-plus in all but two games this season.

“He’s one of the best players in college basketball,” UTSA coach Austin Claunch said. “I think it’s his ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball.”

Bethea scored 21 in his first action without a minutes restriction, hitting 5-10 from 3. The Miami transfer also grabbed six rebounds and added two steals.

“We’ve been saying Jalil’s one of the more talented kids we’ve got,” head coach Nate Oats said. “It’s good to see him come out, shoot it well, play well.”

Jemison finished with 20 points and guard Amari Allen secured a double-double for the second straight game. Guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. returned to the lineup and finished with 10 points, but shot just 4-18, including 2-14 from three.

“[Wrightsell] won’t shoot it that poorly ever again,” Oats said. “I thought he had 14 good looks.”

The highlight of the game was when Oats yielded to the cheers of the student section and subbed in Martin, who is a freshman walk-on. Martin quickly got on the board with a dunk that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Oats praised Martin postgame as a “true program guy”and was proud to see him get a bucket.

“[Martin] loves Alabama. It was great to hear the student section chanting for him,” Oats said. “It was cool he got to get the dunk.”

The Crimson Tide defense was sharp all game, collecting 18 turnovers and holding the Road Runners to just 33% shooting. Forward Aidan Sherrell once again excelled down low, denying another three shots tonight. He now has 16 blocks in his last three games after finishing with just seven the entirety of last season.

Guard Aden Holloway, forward Taylor Bol-Bowen, and forward Keitenn Bristow did not play due to injury.

Alabama looks to get healthy before its matchup with No. 2 Arizona on Saturday night in Birmingham inside Legacy Arena. Tipoff is currently set for 8:30 p.m. on ESPN .
