The Arizona State Sun Devils will take their 8-4 regular season record to El Paso to play ACC champion Duke in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
It’s a rematch of the 2014 Sun Bowl, which ASU won 36-31. Running back Demario Richard had four total touchdowns in the win, two on the ground and two through the air.
Duke beat Virginia on Saturday to take the ACC title game in overtime. Because that left it with a record of 8-5, the ACC was the lone power conference without its champion in the College Football Playoff. Miami was the conference’s only representative.
ASU is 4-3 all-time in Sun Bowl appearances and has won four of its last five, most recently in 2019 behind Jayden Daniels with Herm Edwards as coach.

Those Sun Devils beat Florida State, 20-14, nearly two months after then-Seminoles coach Willie Taggart was fired and 3.5 weeks after former ASU offensive coordinator Mike Norvell was hired to replace him — bringing with him Kenny Dillingham from Memphis.
Dillingham has emphasized ASU’s opportunity to get to 20 wins in a two-year span if it wins the bowl game, something it’s only done once (2013-14) this century.
