Taking the splash n’ dash crown was 21-year-old Jere Hribar of Croatia, who stopped the clock at a speedy effort of 20.70.
That checked in as a Croatian national record, tying the same 20.70 Duje Draganja put on the books during the supersuited 2009 edition of these European Championships.
Entering this competition, Hribar’s lifetime best rested at the 20.88 put up during the semi-finals of last year’s Short Course World Championships. That means he hacked .18 off that result to make history for his nation en route to gold.
Next in line were a pair of athletes in Maxime Grousset of France and Nikita Sheremet of Ukraine.
The duo touched simultaneously in 20.81 to share the silver, with the latter athlete’s time checking in as a new World Junior and European Junior record.
26-year-old Grousset already won the 100m free and 100m fly at this competition, while also securing silver in the 100m IM and bronze in the 50m fly.
His PB in this 50m free remains at the 20.78 notched in the semi-finals of this event at last year’s Short Course World Championships. There in Budapest, the Olympian and LC world champion settled for a 7th place in 20.90.
As for Sheremet, who competes for the University of Louisville in the NCAA, his 20.81 effort broke the previous World Junior record and European Junior record of 20.84 he had set as the lead-off leg on his nation’s men’s 4x50m free relay.
