Ben Johnson Picking the Bears Turned Tom Brady’s Football Life On Its Ear

Ben Johnson spurning Tom Brady’s advances and choosing to coach the Chicago Bears instead of the Las Vegas Raiders has turned out to be a landscape-shifting decision.

One of the things I love about a late-afternoon Bears kickoff is that it allows me to poke around and see what is happening around the NFL. With Chicago’s football team having a 3:25 p.m. CT kickoff in Green Bay, I have time to check in on games and spend some extra time reading news and notes from reporters and league insiders. And, as is always the case, the weekly insider nugget-sharing piece from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini is a doozy — especially with this anecdote about how things are going for the Raiders and minority owner Tom Brady.

The Tom Brady experience isn’t going as planned for the Las Vegas Raiders

These snippets from Russini’s piece at The Athletic made my eyes pop out of my head, and I wanted to share it with the football fans among us:

“I really don’t know what the plan is. I don’t think anyone knows,” one Raider said this week when asked if he felt good about the future of the team. At 2-10, the Raiders sit at the bottom of their division again. Inside the building, people believed Brady would lure the hottest coaching candidates on the market, like Johnson or Vrabel — names every owner coveted last offseason. They landed instead on 74-year-old Pete Carroll, who brought along his sons Nate and Brennan, both offensive assistants. Brady hasn’t been in the facility more than a handful of times this season, but he is involved every day, communicating with (team wellness coordinator Alex) Guerrero, owner Mark Davis, GM John Spytek, coaches and players. Brady pushed for offensive coordinator Chip Kelly to inject pace and creativity into the team’s play calling. They made him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in football. He’s no longer with the team. The rookie class isn’t carrying its weight. Nothing has landed the way it was sold.

Tom Brady’s arrival was supposed to jumpstart a revival in Vegas. His presence was expected to help lure big names and impact players out west. There was a belief that Brady’s gravitas and aura would be enough to land some real game-changers to Sin City. But not only has that not been the case, the Tom Brady factor has been mostly non-existent. And even though Russini reports Brady is in constant contact with the power players in the Raiders organization, it seems as if his presence is negligible.

So much for Tom Brady throwing his rings on the table and getting what he wants for the Raiders.

Hand up! I thought Brady joining forces with the Raiders would lead to the start of some more prosperous times for a once-proud franchise. In my mind, I figured that Brady knew enough to lead Vegas in the right direction and point the team toward winning coaches, front office members, and players. Sure, Pete Carroll is an all-time great coach, a Super Bowl champ, and a true winner. And GM John Spytek still could have a bright future in this league. But it feels like those moves aren’t going to make the type of immediate impact folks out in Vegas were hoping to see.

Which brings me to how I can’t shake the feeling that Ben Johnson choosing to coach the Bears and not the Raiders (despite their best efforts) is what threw this all out of whack for Tom Brady. Johnson’s arrival in Chicago has lit a fire under the organization. We have seen philosophical changes in player evaluation and development, upgrades in coaching and scheme, and an uptick in intangibles that have helped lead this franchise to its first winning season since 2018 — and with five games left to improve on that record.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are a mess and Tom Brady isn’t providing the quick fix that some thought he would. And with former Raiders coach (and player) Antonio Pierce saying that it might take DECADES to fix the mess in Las Vegas, I am certainly glad that Johnson made the decision he did because there is an alternate universe that exists somewhere in which we are wondering what Johnson could have done in Chicago while he thrives elsewhere. Again, I am so thankful we are not existing in that space.

As for Brady, he gets a pristine view of the Ben Johnson experience on Sunday as he will be on the call with Kevin Burkhardt and the rest of the NFL on FOX A-Team broadcast.
