The world of Stranger Things is vast, layered and full of mysteries, so it’s easy to overlook elements from Season 1 that were never mentioned again, including cast members like Will Byers’ dog.
Forgot he had a dog, did ya? Understandable. And you’re not alone!
It’s what led Noah Schnapp to refer to Chester as the "most forgotten" character in the series while chatting with Collider recently.
View this post on InstagramThough it’s arguably a lot better than what actor David Harbour (who plays Jim Hopper) previously said about him. It’s safe to say, the brief time they spent together was far from pleasant, and he’s likely going down in history as his worst on-screen partner.
The four-legged actor has been completely absent since his debut in the premiere season 1 episode, and the show hasn't so much as mentioned him since.
So, what really happened to Chester?
Per Screenrant, while appearing at Stranger Con Chicago prior to the premiere of season 3, Schnapp confirmed that Chester passed away off-screen sometime after the first season, though the events surrounding his demise remain a mystery.
In a new interview with the outlet, Shawn Levy even weighed in on Chester's absence, with the executive producer and director calling the dog's fate one of the "dangling Chads" across the show's lore.
The outcome for Chester is pretty grim, regardless, as Levy said it's "unclear if the Demogorgon ate him" or if the Byers family simply forgot about him and he "died of malnutrition," which somehow makes it worse?

Maybe we can just write our own narrative that he was scared off by a demo and found a new home with a nice family that has no connection to the Upside Down.
With Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 streaming now, concern for Chester was once again revived, as it has been many times through the course of the show's run, with one fan on Threads writing, “Not me googling what happened to the Byers dog in S1 and finding out he got cut cause he was “difficult to work with” lol."
With his fate left up to interpretation, many fans provided their own theories as to what happened to Chester.
One questioned, "Why couldn't they get a new dog that looks similar, people usually cant tell random dogs apart," though a dog likely wouldn't have helped the Byers in their fight against Vecna.
“imma just assume he got eaten too” like Dustin’s moms cat" someone joked, referring to another tragic death.

Another theorized over on Reddit, "Or we’ll see him wandering somerhwere in the Upside Down this season," though he likely wouldn't have very good odds of surviving down there without food and with Demodogs running rampant.
One fan else joked that Chester is probably responsible for this: "That's how we got Demodogs."
"….. there was a dog?" another comment read, completely forgetting the events of episode one.
Someone else brought up another forgotten plot, "Same thing that happened to will’s birthday - forgotten."
As for why Chester was ultimately written out, Harbour seemed to have played a role in that decision, as he reflected on calling the dog "one of the worst actors" he's ever worked with during an appearance on Hot Ones.
"I hated that f---ing dog. I hated that f---ing dog so bad," he confessed.
He went on to explain the reason behind his hatred, stating, "Take after take, it would like wander off or do something."
As for how he suggested they handle it, he recalled telling the creative forces behind the show, "I walked up to them and I was like, 'You know, the Byers should probably have that dog put to sleep next season.'"
"We never talk about it the whole rest of the show, but they just wind up not having a dog," he concluded.
As for his previous comments, he told UPROXX that the "dog was the worst on the set."
He admitted, "I walked off set. I've never done that before," adding, "There's footage of me like, throwing a fit, going like, 'I'm gonna be in my trailer!' and just storming off, 'cause the damn dog wouldn't do what it was supposed to do. It was just supposed to bark at a thing."
Hopefully, the demogorgans were easier to work with!
