Gene Simmons claimed that his late bandmate Ace Frehley’s lifestyle choices may have led to his unexpected death earlier this year. The legendary KISS guitarist died on Oct. 16 after suffering a fall that led to a fatal brain bleed. Frehley’s cause of death at age 74 was listed as blunt force trauma to the head, per a medical examiner’s report from TMZ. The legendary rocker’s death was ruled as accidental.
But Simmons, one of the most outspoken members of the iconic glam rock band, recently alleged that Frehley didn’t take advice from his loved ones before the accident.
“He refused [advice] from people that cared about him – including yours truly – to try to change his lifestyle,” Simmons, 76, told The New York Post in a December 2025 interview. “In and out of bad decisions. Falling down the stairs — I’m not a doctor — doesn’t kill you. There may have been other issues, and it breaks my heart. …The saddest thing – you reap what you shall sow, unfortunately.”While he was known for his hard-partying ways during KISS’s early days, five years before his death, Frehley told Loudwire he had been sober for 14 years. At the time, the “New York Groove” singer said he maintained his sobriety with the help of a solid support system and “thousands of AA meetings.”
In the New York Post interview, Simmons said the most heartbreaking thing was the timing of Frehley’s death just two months before KISS was honored with a lifetime achievement honor at The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in Washington, D.C.
“Saddest of all perhaps is that Ace just couldn’t stay alive long enough to sit there proudly at the Kennedy Center and listen to – I can’t even tell you who’s going to come out … really impressive people, just to say how much KISS meant to them,” the KISS bassist added. “What can you say – sad.”
Frehley learned of the band’s impending Kennedy Center honor in August when the honorees were first announced by President Donald Trump. The rock legend called it a “dream come true that I never thought would materialize,” according to Billboard.
Frehley was honored posthumously at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony on December 6. In a video from the ceremony shared by Fox News, President Trump presented custom Kennedy Center Honors medals to original KISS members Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss. The late Ace Frehley was represented by his daughter, Monique Frehley.
