Blackhawks 0, Kings 6 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

Since the Blackhawks beat the Kings on Thursday night, there have been rumors that LA is looking to make a coaching change. There have been names linked to potential trade interest. There have been comments about not making the playoffs. So everyone in the world should have figured a veteran team would push back hard.

The Blackhawks had a solid opening 20 minutes, but neither team scored. In the second period, the Kings defensive structure really strangled the Blackhawks’ speed game. Unfortunately, Warren Foegele found the back of the net 1:55 into the second period for the game’s first goal. The next goal came almost 15 minutes later, and it was a power play goal for the Kings. LA added a third goal inside the final minute of the third period.

Brandt Clarke scored the third goal for LA in the closing seconds of the second period and then scored their fourth of the night early in the third. Just not a good night overall for the Blackhawks. But how about them Hoosiers?

    Star 1: André Burakovsky

At the end of the second period, Burakovsky was tied for the Blackhawks’ team lead with four shot attempts, two scoring chances and one high danger chance. He was also tied for the team lead with two blocked shots.

    Star 2: Louis Crevier

Crevier was credited with three shots on goal (tied for the team high) and one hit. He had an even plus-minus in a game that saw the Blackhawks allow five even-strength goals.

    Star 3: Colton Dach

Dach was credited with one shot on net an one hit. Like Crevier, he had an even plus-minus in a game that saw the Blackhawks allow five even-strength goals.

    Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks had a 21-13 shot attempt advantage and 9-6 scoring chances advantage in the opening 20 minutes. The Kings had a 12-11 shot attempt advantage and 12-4 scoring chances advantage in the second period. The biggest difference: LA had a 7-1 advantage in high danger chances in the second. The Blackhawks won only 14 of 38 faceoffs (37 percent) thru two periods. Anže Kopitar won 10 of 16 by himself for LA. Frank Nazar won 5 of a Blackhawks’ high 11 faceoffs in the first two periods. Nazar finished the night winning 8 of 15 faceoffs. Ryan Greene was on the ice for eight of the Blackhawks’ 16 shots on net thru two periods. Facing the same team in consecutive starts and twice in three nights is a unique for a goalie during the regular season. Spencer Knight was good early but didn’t get much help tonight. This save against a short-handed 2-on-0 break for the Kings in the second period kept the Blackhawks within one.
