Ralf Tribuntsov set his third individual Estonian record of the meet in tonight’s 50 back semi-finals, clocking 22.63 to hack almost a quarter of a second off his mark from this morning.
He was out two tenths quicker this evening, while coming back ever so slightly faster on the second 25. He has posted three 22-point swims in Lublin, and seems to be peaking at the right time.
Tribuntsov is now the 3rd-fastest man in the world this year, and the fastest of anyone in tomorrow’s final.

He is only 0.02 seconds away from a share of 10th, and just a tenth away from Ryan Murphy in 6th. With the improvements he has shown so far this week, dropping from 22.91 to 22.63, that would not be out of the realsm of possibility.
The former USC swimmer has had a fantastic fall, breaking national records in the 50 free, 50 back, 100 back, and 100 IM. He has lowered his 50 free mark three times, going from 21.22 to 20.77, and has broken the 50 back record the same number of times to drop four tenths.
His best time just two months ago stood at 23.06 in this event, and he has swum under that on four occasions now. His swims this week have showcased his improvement, with swims of 22.83 (mixed medley leadoff), 22.86 (50 back heats) and 22.63 (50 back semi-finals).
Tribuntsov scratched out of the 50 free heats this morning to focus on this event, and that decision looks an inspired one right now. His 50 free time from earlier in the week would have progressed him through to the final as the fastest qualifier, but with an in-form pair of Maxime Grousset and Jere Hribar to contend with would be more of a toss-up for the win.
He leads the qualifiers in the 50 back by 0.16 seconds, and was one of five men under 23 seconds tonight. He was not the only record breaker as well – Ollie Morgan (Great Britain) and Robert Pedersen (Denmark) also set new national standards.
Pedersen’s time of 23.01 was his second record of the day after going 23.18 in prelims and he is one of many success stories for the Danes, who had broken more national records than anyone else at the end of Day 3.

She looks the strongest of the field, even with World Record holder and World Champion Ruta Meilutyte in attendance.
Jefimova has already won one title here in Lublin, taking the 100 breast by nearly a second in a new Championship and Estonian Record of 1:02.82, and looks primed to add another. She is inching closer to Benedetta Pilato‘s Championship record of 28.86 in this event, and will be the woman to beat.
She moves up into the top ten in history, ranking 7th.

Their swimmers have qualified for six finals already, with the potential for one of the relays to make a seventh tomorrow. That is already one of their most successful European Short Course Championships by finals, and a second title from either Jefimova or Tribuntsov would cement that status.
Estonia won two medals in 2023, both from Jefimova who won gold in the 100 breast and silver in the 50 breast. They have only ever won two gold medals at the European Short Course Championships, both from Jefimova in the 100 breast.
A medal apiece tomorrow for her and Tribuntsov would match their most successful championships ever. They won three medals in both 2011 and 2012, thanks to siblings Triin Aljand and Martti Aljand.
