After tough loss, Alabama’s CFP hopes in limbo

No. 9 Alabama was dominated by No. 3 Georgia in the SEC championship game Saturday, losing 28-7. Following the loss, its College Football Playoff chances are uncertain.

Coming into the game, the team had a 97% chance to make the CFP, according to the Allstate Playoff Predictor. Now, with a third loss by double digits, the SEC runners-up could be jumped by idle two-loss teams, like No. 10 Notre Dame and No. 12 Miami, who did not have to play a 13th game.

“If this game applies to and takes away from our resume, I don’t think that’s right,” head coach Kalen DeBoer said postgame. “I think the precedent has been set.”

Alabama was bumped above No. 10 Notre Dame on Tuesday following its win against Auburn, which appeared to signal that the team was likely in the 12-team field.

But, with the team unable to keep up with the Bulldogs on Saturday, it is possible that No. 12 Miami could leapfrog the Crimson Tide. The Hurricanes defeated the Fighting Irish in Week 1 and also downed Florida State, which Alabama lost to 31-17 in Week 1.

Last season, ACC runner-up SMU was kept in the 12-team field over Alabama. The committee cited not penalizing teams that played a 13th game as a reason the Mustangs remained over the Crimson Tide, despite a worse strength of schedule and no wins over Top 25 opponents.

If this precedent is kept, Alabama will keep its place among the 12, likely dropping to No. 10, ahead of the fourth and fifth-best conference champions.

“I think that our resume speaks for itself,” quarterback Ty Simpson said. “We went through a gauntlet of a schedule. The SEC is the best conference in the country.”

One year later, Alabama will be hoping that precedent remains on Selection Sunday. Fans may tune into the final CFP rankings reveal at 11 a.m. CT Sunday on ESPN.
