No. 9 Alabama’s championship hopes never got off the runway in Saturday’s 28-7 SEC championship loss to No. 3 Georgia. The manhandling now calls the Crimson Tide’s chances of making the College Football Playoff into question.
“It’s shaping up to be an unnerving Selection Sunday for Alabama,” On3’s Chris Low posted after the game.
The most jarring stat of the evening was Alabama’s negative three rushing yards, compared to Georgia’s 141 yards.
“We were just one or two things away from having a big play,” quarterback Ty Simpson said. “Credit to Georgia’s defense. They did a good job. We just got to make the easy things easy.”
It took time for both offenses to find footing in this game, as the first four drives of the contest resulted in punts.
The fourth, which was attempted by Alabama, was blocked by receiver Cole Speer and set the Bulldogs up with superb field position at the Crimson Tide 21.
This resulted in a 2-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gunner Stockton to running back Roderick Robinson II to put UGA up 7-0 with 4:36 left in the first.
Alabama then looked like it was getting things going offensively, until Simpson threw a pass intended for wide receiver Germie Bernard that was intercepted by Georgia defensive back Daylen Everette in the final minute of the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs rode this momentum to another score when Stockton found wide receiver Dillon Bell for a five-yard touchdown to jump out to a 14-0 lead with 8:43 left in the second quarter.
Simpson and the offense were incapable of responding in the first half, with a pair of punts being rattled off, making for a total of four on the half.
Outside of a few chunk plays, neither offense got much going in the first half. The difference in the game was the blocked punt and the interception as each led to scores for the Bulldogs.
The Crimson Tide came out of the half just as flat as it entered it, punting on its opening possession. Georgia then added to its lead via a 9-yard rushing touchdown from running back Nate Frazier to make the score a daunting 21-0 with 10:47 left in the third.
Alabama punted again after a couple of miscues on the ensuing possession, giving the ball right back to a Georgia team that could taste the blood in the water.
The defense held strong and forced a punt but was still unable to get going offensively. It punted yet again, down three scores in the waning minutes of the third quarter.
The defense continued to do its job to end the quarter, forcing another UGA punt. The offense finally did something as well. On the final play of the frame, Simpson found freshman tight end Kaleb Edwards for 21 yards in hopes to spark some sort of momentum.
Alabama turned the spark into points, as Simpson hit Bernard in desperation on a third-and-10 for a 23-yard score to cut the deficit to 21-7 with 12:33 left in the ballgame.
The Crimson Tide defense came up big once again, bringing Stockton down on third down to force a Georgia punt. Unfortunately for Alabama, which was in search of a comeback, the booming punt placed the team down inside its own 5 with 9:08 left.
“We were just going out there and trying to do whatever we can to get the ball back to our offense,” linebacker Deontae Lawson said.
Alabama was unable to gain even 10 yards and turned the ball over on downs, deep within its own territory with under nine minutes left to play.
Georgia turned this into a touchdown to extend its lead back to three possessions at 28-7 after Stockton found wide receiver Zachariah Branch for a score with 6:51 on the clock.
The Crimson Tide continued to fight as it drove into UGA territory in hopes of tightening the score late. Instead, Simpson ran around for his life on fourth down and threw a ball towards the endzone that was dropped by Bernard, handing possession back to Georgia.
The Bulldogs let the clock melt away and watched blue, yellow and white confetti shower them in celebration of a second-straight Southeastern Conference championship.
As for Alabama’s postseason aspirations, DeBoer thinks his team has done enough to qualify for the CFP.
“If this game applies to and takes away from our resume, I don’t think that’s right.” head coach Kalen DeBoer said.
The Crimson Tide hopes to qualify for the CFP during ESPN’s selection show, which is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
