Last week, we learned of the major (and mostly negative/financially pessimistic) changes coming to Marquee Sports Network here at the end of 2025.
In short, the Region Sports Network, co-owned by the Cubs and Sinclair Broadcast Group, announced its plans to scale back across the organization in a series of cost-saving endeavors. There’s a lot more to it than this, but among the immediate, front-facing fallout was the firings of content director Tony Andracki and reporter Andy Martinez.
The subsequent concern among most Cubs fans, then, was what was going to happen to the actual Cubs game broadcast at Marquee — specifically, the people that bring us our information before, during, and after the game, and the quality of the production itself. That is, after all, Marquee’s best and most important offering.
Marquee Sports Network Update
Well, good news there, as the game-watching experience in 2026 shouldn’t look any different than it has in the past, per Cubs President Crane Kenney via Inside the Clubhouse this morning:
The first and easiest decision was to recommit to our game broadcast. Cole Wright’s contract was up; we renewed Cole. J.D. (Jim Deshaies), and Boog (Jon Sciambi), and Taylor (McGregor), and Elise (Menaker); they’re all under contract. So that wasn’t going to change. We kept our production team in tact. So from a ‘game-watching’ perspective, which I think most of our fans care most about, not a lot is changing next year. We’re going to introduce some new technology. But we’re just committed to over-serving on the game broadcast.
That’s a relief.
I know not everyone is a fan of all the on-air talent at Marquee Sports Network, but that’s really beside the point. It is unquestionably a good thing that both the talent AND production team will return for at least 2026. You may have gripes with what they say, how often they speak, or their, at times, overwhelming and self-advertorial in-game segments, but it absolutely was not going to be BETTER if they lost people or resources.
Likewise, the quality of the Cubs game broadcast on Marquee has improved as time has gone on, and I’d hate for them to lose any progress, ESPECIALLY in the name of cost-cutting.
So there’s a little good news for your Saturday.
Side note: One thing I didn’t hear Crane Kenney address was any planned changes or further reductions to the Cubs’ Spring Training coverage. It’s not the most important thing in the world, but I enjoy getting early eyes on the Cubs’ newest players or youngest prospects, and Marquee’s coverage of Spring Training is often the best or only opportunity to do so. As I recall, the Cubs broadcast fewer Spring Training games in 2025 than they did in 2024, so hopefully there are no further cutbacks on that front.
