Weather warnings issued as over half a month’s worth of rain to fall in 24 hours

A yellow weather warning has been issued over concerns south-west England and Wales could experience more than half a month’s rainfall in 24 hours.

Forecasters predict that wet and windy weather could hit the areas from this weekend through to Tuesday.

A yellow weather warning is also in place across Northern Ireland from 8am to 3pm on Sunday.

The Met Office’s warning for the South West England and South Wales will be in place for 24 hours from 6pm on Monday.

It spans from the Isles of Scilly to Gloucester, and west to St David’s in Pembrokeshire.

Outbreaks of rain are predicted to turn persistent and heavy for 24 hours from 6pm on Monday.

From 6pm on Monday, outbreaks of rain will turn persistent and heavy for 24 hours, the Met Office said.

Up to 40mm of rain expected in some areas and 60–80mm is thought to be likely over Dartmoor and high ground in south Wales – more than half the average December rainfall.

More than a dozen flood warnings are in place across England on Saturday – there are also nine in Scotland and two in Wales.

The excessive rainfall could mean some communities could face floods, and homes and businesses could be damaged by rising water.

The Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist Steven Keates said the bad weather will be sparked by a “a deepening area of low pressure” approaching the UK from the south-west later on Monday.

He said “heavy rain and strong winds” are “likely to affect the UK between late Monday and early Wednesday”.

Mr Keates added it was hard to predict which areas will be most badly hit, saying: “At present, the exact track, depth, and timings of this low are uncertain, which makes it harder to determine where will be most impacted by strong winds and/or heavy rain.

“This system has the potential to cause disruption, and severe weather warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend as details become clearer. We therefore urge people to keep up-to-date with the latest Met Office forecast.”

The warnings follow gusts of up to 40mph hitting parts of the south coast overnight into Saturday.

Why is it so unsettled at the moment? A powerful jet stream will continue to drive our weather into next week and may help to rapidly deepen an area of low pressure later on Monday and into Tuesday. pic.twitter.com/8hafEuP9DM

Firefighters in Seaford, East Sussex, were called out after a garage roof and door were torn off in the high winds.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to Victor Close shortly after 6am and were working to make several homes safe.

Temperatures are expected to stay mild on Saturday and Sunday, but gusty winds and further rain will persist, with heavy downpours most likely in south Wales, south-west England and Cumbria.

Rain in south Wales and south-west England on saturated ground could lead to difficult travel conditions, the Met Office warned.
