Beloved Mavericks frontman Raul Malo is facing a difficult chapter as he navigates stage 4 cancer, but he isn’t facing it alone. Fans are stepping up in a major way, most recently by raising money to help cover his treatment.
The country singer was first diagnosed with colon cancer in June 2024. Since then, he has undergone surgery to remove a liver tumor and part of his colon, followed by chemotherapy.
The 60-year-old was also diagnosed in September 2025 with Leptomeningeal Disease, a rare illness where cancer cells spread into the fluid and tissues that protect the brain and spinal cord. While there is currently no cure, treatment can help manage symptoms and slow progression — though it often comes with emotional and financial strain.
This week, just before a two-night celebration of his career at the Ryman Auditorium, Malo was hospitalized again. Following his LMD diagnosis, his wife, Betty Malo, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the cost of treatment. She reminded fans about the fundraiser following this latest hospitalization.
On Thursday, December 4, Betty shared an update on Facebook, letting fans know Raul had been taken to the ER.
“Our love is fighting hard right now but not a second goes by that he doesn’t appreciate all the love everyone shows him,” she wrote alongside photos of the couple holding hands. “The boys and I had to bring him to the ER earlier today but (Raul Malo) is stable and ready to fight."
His wife made an urgent plea to fans, adding, "Raul has changed many lives and his music has brought so much love to so many people. Let’s all stand with him and rally!!!”
Under the GoFundMe’s description, it reads, “On behalf of my sisters and our mothers, Peggy and Norma, we humbly ask for your support. Many of you may still be in shock, as we are, after learning of Raul’s LMD diagnosis, but together we can ensure he receives the care he needs.”
It seems fans have answered that call, as the fundraiser has now brought in more than $260,000. Donors have also shared many moving messages of support with the family.
“You've given so much to others. It's time to give back! You and your family are in my prayers,” one fan wrote, while another added, “Your music and voice lifts me up when I’m down and makes me dance “all across the floor.” Sending healing vibes your way.”
