How the Currys Are Transforming Oakland Schools

Founded in 2019 by Steph and Ayesha Curry, Eat. Learn. Play. has invested more than $90 million into Oakland schools through its “Whole Child, Whole School” approach. This initiative focuses on children’s well-being and improving learning environments.

Since its inception, the foundation has provided 25 million meals to Oakland kids and families, remodeled 20 schoolyards and six gymnasiums and redesigned 14 cafeterias and modernized three libraries, according to the foundation’s website.

Beyond physical spaces, the Currys are tackling the literacy gap. They recently committed to delivering one-on-one tutoring support for 10,000 Oakland students over the next five years.

In May, Ayesha Curry emphasized the impact by telling TIME Magazine: “With just a little bit of one-on-one tutoring, you're able to have these kids jump leaps and bounds. They're also being instilled with so much confidence now that is shifting to every other subject matter within the school day. It's such a beautiful thing.”

Steph and Ayesha Curry’s connection to Oakland runs deep. Even after the Golden State Warriors moved their home arena to San Francisco in 2019, the Currys remained committed to giving back to their hometown.

Their foundation’s latest project at Emerson Elementary closes out a year of tangible impact: 24 transformed schoolyards, spaces where children can learn, play, and grow in safe, creative environments. The Currys’ partnership continues to show that their influence stretches far beyond the basketball court.
