Below Deck star Fraser Olender is speaking out about a frightening trip to the emergency room he says was caused by vaping.
The 33-year-old chief stew revealed the ordeal in an Instagram post shared on Friday, December 5, sharing a carousel of recovery photos and a detailed account of what happened.
“A few weeks ago I was rushed to hospital due to severe chest pains and difficulties breathing,” Olender wrote. “Following this, I spent a week in London hospitals seeing specialists to identify the cause and possible damage of the incident.”
View this post on InstagramThe specialists eventually figured out the cause. “To keep it simple—I had vape poisoning, (an E-cigarette or Vaping-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI)) and I have never experienced fear or pain like it.”
EVALI, is a potentially life-threatening condition linked to vaping products. According to the American Heart Association, more than half of recorded cases require ICU treatment, and symptoms can escalate into serious respiratory complications.
In Olender’s case, he said the vaping injury triggered a coronary artery vasospasm—“the arteries supplying blood to my heart suddenly clamped down”—leading to an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). He explained that the heart attack occurred “not because of a blockage, but because [his] heart wasn’t getting enough oxygen during the spasm.”
Olender made clear just how severe the experience was. “The pain I endured for 24 hours was inexplicable, 2 rounds of morphine didn’t touch the sides and eventually had to be given the strongest pain relief legal to administer in ER—and that only brought my pain from a 10 to a 7,” he wrote.
Olender revealed he’s done vaping for good, and he hopes others will quit, too. “I could have died for the sake of something so ridiculously stupid,” he wrote. “So please do yourselves a favour and give it up too—cold turkey. We do not know enough about these horrific things but I can tell you one thing; that was NOT cute, not even for the plot.”
Fans were quick to leave Olender their thoughts and prayers in the comments.
“So happy you are okay! And proud of you for giving up that poison! “ one wrote.
Another shared, “throwing out my vape now! love that you are alive & thriving.”
A third stated, “Thank you for sharing! If it helps one person it was worth sharing!”
Oleder ended with gratitude for fans: “Love you all, be safe, put your health first and thank you for all of your well wishes ??.”
