The Bulls got off to a good start in the first quarter of this one. Matas Buzelis was red-hot early and looked like he was on pace to have one of his better nights of the season, and he was doing something the Bulls have struggled to do offensively – get to the free throw line. However, despite a 33-30 lead after the first quarter and a 6-6 effort from Buzelis at the charity stripe, Chicago still found themselves trailing at the half thanks to the same miscues that have become all too familiar.
At halftime, the Bulls had nine turnovers to the Pacers’ four. Eight of those turnovers came from their best players – Coby White (2), Matas Buzelis (3), and Josh Giddey (3). Things like injuries or another team getting hot can be out of your control. Turnovers, however, are something you can control. So seeing Chicago finish with more than double the turnover amount of Indiana at the break, mostly due to their best players giving the ball away, was a disappointing development.
In that first half, Billy Donovan’s crew was also outscored 28-18 in the paint. Zach Collins’ return to the lineup was supposed to help them out defensively in the paint, but he was a little rusty in his first game of the season, which can be expected. Also, after starting 1-9 from deep, Indiana caught fire late in the first 24 minutes from long range and finished the half on an 8-12 run.
The second half didn’t start much better. The Pacers got off to a 5-2 start in the third quarter, expanding their lead to eight and forcing Billy Donovan into a timeout less than a minute into the frame. Then, out of that timeout, Indiana went on a 6-0 run. Just like that, it was a 73-59 lead with the Bulls committing three more turnovers instantly out of the half. Before you know it, it was a 16-2 run for Indiana and an 80-61 lead.
It’s hard to get too mad about physical mistakes. Those happen. It’s the mental mistakes (turnovers) and the mindset (being outphysicaled) that really were upsetting to watch. Indiana had so many open looks from three, and sure, they hit a lot of them, but there just didn’t seem to be a sense of urgency defensively to make them work for those looks.
The Bulls would go on a run of their own, though, as is the case in most NBA games. Eventually, they would cut the game to just an 86-83 deficit thanks to an all-around effort on both ends of the floor. After a Pacers bucket, Jevon Carter had a chance to cut it to 88-86, but he missed an open look from deep, and Indiana went back down the floor and got Pascal Siakam to the line after an offensive rebound, and he extended Indiana’s lead to 90-83.
The rest of the game kind of went just like that. The Bulls would go on mini runs to tighten the game, but every time it got too close, the Pacers would just kind of swat them back down and answer with a run of their own.
New game, same story. The Chicago Bulls fall to a bad team, largely due to not being able to get out of their own way. Credit to Pascal Siakam; he was awesome tonight, but still, just another very disappointing performance from Billy Donovan’s team.
