Derek Hough has been a part of the Dancing with the Starsfamily for nearly two decades and he says there's one comment from a judge that will stick with him forever.
The longtime dancer and host recently sat down with choreographer Kenny Ortega, who served as a guest judge as part of the show's 18th season. During the interview, the pair reflected on the shared experience that Hough says changed his life.
"You've been an incredible inspiration, personally, to me and I have to thank you," Hough shared in the clip posted by Extra on Instagram on Friday (Dec. 5).

He continued, "I just remember being on Dancing with the Stars and you were a guest judge. It was a time when the judges weren't really acknowledging the dancers, you know, the pros. It was more about the celebrities. I'll never forget [your words] as long as I live."
In a clip from the 2014 episode of DWTS, Ortega complimented Hough and told him that he "redefined choreography for this generation."
After watching the clip together, Hough said, "Hearing those words coming from somebody that I respected so much, it really changed my life because it gave me this sort of sense of confidence and belief [in myself]. I just want to thank you because it really was a pivotal moment."
Ortega went on to tell Hough that he has been a "shaper of dance" and "changed dance" forever congratulating him on all of his accomplishments. He even compared Hough to Gene Kelly, saying that Hough is the closest thing to the iconic star that we have today.
