Belgian Roos Vanotterdijk has been forced to withdraw from the remainder of the European Short Course Championships, which run through Sunday, December 7.

Vanotterdijk, 20, announced on social media that she has fallen ill after racing the first four days of the competition.

    She wrote on Instagram:

This wasn’t an easy decision, but due to illness I will be withdrawing from the remainder of this European Championships. Not the outcome I wanted, but sometimes taking a step back is the strongest move forward. Thank you for the support and see you soon!

Her training partner, Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands, also fell sick last night with an “upper respiratory issue.” Despite his illness, Corbeau earned a silver medal in the 200 breast today, adding to the gold he won earlier this week in the 100 breast.

Both train in Antwerp under coach Mark Faber, who took over as head of the Flemish Swimming Federation last November.

Earlier in the meet, Vanotterdijk won silver in the 50 fly (24.84) and 100 IM (56.80), setting Belgian records in both events. Today, she finished fifth in the 100 fly (55.79) and 200 breast (2:21.05), a bit off her national marks of 55.64 and 2:18.07.

The withdrawal is an unfortunate setback in what has been a huge breakthrough year. At the European U23 Championships in July, she collected gold in the 50 fly, 100 fly, and 50 back, plus silver in the 100 back. She then broke through at World Championships with two individual medals: a silver in the 100 fly (55.84) and a bronze in the 50 fly (25.32). Her 100 fly silver on day two marked Belgium’s first World Championships medal since 1998, seven years before she was born.

She is undoubtedly the most versatile female swimmer in Europe, and one of the most versatile swimmers in the world. She currently holds 13 Belgian Records across each of the four strokes and IM: seven in short course and six in long course.
